Squeezebox and my entire collection...
« on: 23 Aug 2007, 03:42 pm »
Is a squeezebox (or more importantly the slimdevices software) capable of handling a library of this size?

 Total Artists:      3759
Total Albums:    10489
Total Tracks:    185439
Total Size:    555.75 GB
Total Length:    255 days 10 hours 36 minutes 29 seconds

Thanks.

Sure.  It just depends on how much hard disk you buy.  I believe Wayne at Bolder had about 1.5 TB disk on his PC last year.

My music is on a server (linux, ubuntu running samba, has 2.5TB in one array, 1.5TB in the other)
Is network connection to library a problem for SB?

I don't believe that would be a problem.  As long as you can mount your library as a drive on the machine running the Slim Server software, it should be fine.

Shouldn't be a problem.

How did you get that many albums on 555gb?  You aren't using lossless then.

:duh: :duh: I was wondering that too.  I would guess that in lossless that would take close to 5tb.

RAID 5:

Setting up several disks to all work as one with all data being written on 2 disks.  The sky is only limited by the number of drive headers in the controller and the size of the disk.  All disks must be the same size or all will be treated as the smallest disk.  Total amount of storage is SIZE_OF_DISK * (NUMBER_OF DRIVES -1).  So if you put in 8 500 Gig drives, you'd get 500 * (8-1) drives = 3.5 TB.  8 TB drives would give you 7 TB.  4 500's would give you 1.5 TB.

You do need a controller chip/board with RAID 5 capability.  Many today only have JBOD, RAIDs 0 and 1 - and maybe 10.

You can lose a drive and lose nothing.  Swap in a new one and let it rebuild itself.

I think the point being made here about lossless is:
why spend the $$ on Raid 5, etc if all we're doing is streaming MP3's (each album is about 50 meg according to the math; a wav album is 500meg, a FLAC one about half that...very rough).  I mean, nothing against MP3 quality, but as long as we're buying a sh%tload of storage, let's do it right and store GOOD stuff.  :)

I'd agree completely.  I was merely commenting on the 5 TB required to do it with FLAC.

Nah, I'm not lossless, if I want lossless I play a record.  Some of it is lossless, much of it is not.  Variety is the spice of life.

And yes, I am raid5, it's on an ubuntu box running software raid5.  It's quite stable at this point, and I remember a time some 5 or 6 years ago when I was first running raid 5 (with 40gb disks) it was less than super stable, like, it was risky to migrate a raid array from one server to another.  Now, it's childs play.  at the moment I am using phpmpd and mpd on a fanless mini-itx machine to manage the collection.  Here are some pics....
