nickle creek with FIONA APPLE!!
« on: 20 Aug 2007, 01:10 pm »
The lady and I went to see Nickle Creek with VERY special guest Fiona Apple on Friday.  During this show Nickle Creek played some songs and Fiona would come out and they would back her on a few of her songs etc.  NC was a OK back up band for Fiona the strings work well.  People told me that NC was "Popular Bluegrass" whatever the F that means.  I did not care for it at all.  I could not get River Dance out of my head for some reason.  Anyway I would say this is music that Ellsworth Toohey would have told everyone was great.  Fiona on the other had was absolutely amazing!  She is a wonderful preformer and you can tell she loves her art.  She can convey emotion so well its scary.  I was really bummed that the show was mostly NC.  I had never seen Fiona before but love her albums.  She is now on the list of "Do not miss when in town" artists.  Would have been nice if they could have split it up into sets so we could leave but then I guess the half full crowd would be nearly empty for the headliner.  The cheers for Fiona were at least double then for NC.  Oh well hopefully next time she will be on her own.

I have Nickel Creek's first album and I think it is excellent with virtuoso instrumentals and harmonies that bring back memories of Crosby, Stills and Nash. Pretty amazing for such a young group. If you don't like the bluegrass genre...why go to the concert?

When I saw the title of this post I was taken back.  When I read the original post I was even more astounded.  What kind of idiot would put these two together for a tour

I happen to like both Fiona and Nickel Creek and have most of both "groups" releases.  None the less I wouldn't want to see the two of them playing together, it's just a bad mix of two good but different types of music, etc.

I agree that it's an odd mix. I like both musicians/groups quite a bit independently, but i don't see them fitting together well.

I recently saw another show involving a strange mix of bands. It was a Rufus Wainwright (bit hard to tie down stylistically, but sometimes called popera or baroque pop) concert at which Neko Case (alt-country) was one of the opening acts. I already knew both bands well and liked them before the show. I enjoyed both performances, but i overheard many people in the audience saying they didn't like Neko Case at all.

Fiona Apple is very talented and yes, she can convey emotion - lots of it.  I wish she recorded more.

I am a big Nickel Creek fan.  IMO, they are one of the most interesting and amazingly talented groups to come along on the acoustic music scene in years!  Though they developed their chops, years ago, playing Bluegrass, their music has evolved into a very different style today.  Sara Watkins calls it "High energy chamber music."  I think that's a pretty good description.  They apparently developed a friendship with Fiona through playing together at Club Largo, in L.A.  According to their web site, their August tour dates will include Fiona, and the fans will be treated to expansions of the collaborations developed at Largo.  Based on my limited knowledge of Fiona's music (watched a few of her videos tonight), I'm afraid that fans of either group/artist may be disappointed with the results.  I have tickets to see Nickel Creek when they come to Florida in November, and am glad they will not be performing with Apple at that point.

The main reason I went it for FIONA!!  I did not care if she was playing with the Backstreet Boys.

Also I do like blue grass! Quite a bit actually but I like it raw and dirty.  I tend to like a lot of my music dirty and raw.  That why I like 69 Dead vs 77.  NC did not really sound like the bluegrass that I listen to.    I am not saying I am a aficionado but I like it.  There is a place here in Boston that has free "pick-up" bluegrass that is mostly Berkley students etc.  Its wonderful.
