superhemp old and new?
« on: 24 Sep 2007, 08:03 pm »
greetings...first post here.  i've searched this forum and haven't found a satisfactory answer so i thought i'd start a new thread...

i'm looking into purchasing a pair of superhemps from a friend who says they are the older version (not new drivers).  i've read some of the threads on the new 4.5" drivers but not much on the 8" drivers.  can someone please shed some light on the differences in the 8" drivers b/n old and new?  btw, these would also be my first foray into single driver speakers.

thanks in advance for your help!  :D

Hi kugino,

Many thanks for your post.

The new 8" hemp drivers are a big improvement from the old and it well worth having the change over done. The new driver has a new motor, larger whizzer cone and a very open style basket. The cosmetics look much better too.

I have gotten more bass extension, fuller midbass and a smother midrange with the new style driver. They can also take a good amount of power as well.

Thanks again,
Louis

Following up to Louis' post:

I upgraded from the Mk.1 to Mk.II and got closer to what Louis describes the MK.III brings to the table.

I didn't go for the latest driver because I had just purchased mine (used) and didn't want to be without them for the time it would take to compete the cabinet modifications for the new driver and the MK.II version was less expensive (not sure if he has anymore left).

Let me say that I love my Hemptones. This was my first foray into the single driver x-over-less world and wow, what a huge difference. I listen to much more music now.

My advice, factor in the cost of putting in the new drivers (and shipping) of the SuperHemps and see if it's a good deal. If it is, I'd go for it. However, don't forgo getting new speakers from Louis as it may be the overall better deal.

And Louis, I'd be more than happy to give you an true review of the last three 8" hemp drivers. Just let me know. :)
