supporting larger caps on Cornet2 PCB
« on: 3 Aug 2007, 05:37 pm »
For my output caps, I chose Dynamicaps (1uF, C208).  These caps seems a little heavier than others.  I was thinking that I should use a blob of hot-glue to secure a zip-tie to the PCB and use the zip-tie to support the cap.

Is there likely to be sufficient heat near the C208's to cause the hot-glue to melt?

Do I really need to worry about supporting these caps at all?

I have the Mundorf Silver in Oil hanging there ever since I built the preamp.  I did not cut the leads because I was swapping other caps back and forth during my cap rolling "experiment".  Too lazy to do it now!  No problems so far.

Amandarae,

OK, I'll maybe go for "swinging" caps.  Maybe they have a similar effect as the swinging choke

You really should cut the cap leads so the body is relatively tight against the board, not "swinging". Capacitors can be RF antennas and of course "swinging" could lead to solder coming undone and the leads doing nasty things under power.
Best strategy is to use silicone caulk as an adhesive/damper. A little dab'll do ya.

Hot glue is ok.  Nothing in the C2 will melt it.  Regular silicone glue might be better, as it doesn't put a hot spot onto your cap (who knows what that might do to a hand-wound audiophile cap).
