hello,

i recently upgraded my living room listening system to the reference 3.1s.  They are being driven off the zone b of my mcintosh mht100 receiver located about 40ft away in the other room.  unfortunately, all i have to the speakers is a single run pair of wires.  i would like to be able to add a subwoofer amplifier to biamp the speakers, but i need a decent subwoofer amplifier which can get a respectable signal off a speaker signal input, and also have a lowpass filter of 80hz or 60hz.  of course, the cheaper the better.  please let me know what idea you guys have.

thanks much,

jp

if i purchased a pair and had them mounted on the wall would this be a good solution for subwoofer amplification?  has anybody used this make and model?

thanks much,

The best solution I have heard period is Tube Pre/Amp with Mono Blocs or Tubed  Pre and High Current SS Amp. All of this combination gives the SA from Gallo activating the 2nd voice coil nice deep, tight, sealed Bass.

I was in the same boat.

The Gallo Sub amp is superb but it is about 900.00. I bought it more for convenience than anything else. I saw a decent dedicated SA in Parts Express Catalog, I think. It was around 400.00. and it was a MASH I think.  That might be the best alternative. Check with the folks at Gallo before buying it to make sure it is completely compatible. ( no harm in asking, they know their sub amp is expensive).

However, I do have issues with the Gallo sub. It is only a 10 incher, so regardless of amplification, bass is good but a bit tight. If you like it very deep and very musical, consider adding an over-performing cheap sub like HSU and forget about discreet amplification to the sub.  Parts express has a 15 inch
Dayton for around 500.00. Thats another altertnative.

I own the Gallo sub amp which works very well except I had to disconnect the fan because it came on at even low volume levels and was simply too loud. I had used a Parasound Halo A23 amp before the Gallo but it didn't throw enough current to make the second voice sing. Also if you buy a cheap sub amp - such as the one from Parts Express - make sure its a stereo amp since you need to power the voice coils in each speaker. Most sub amps are only mono which won't do you much good unless you buy two of them. This may sound like a "duh" comment but it took me a while to realize it.  :D

thanks for the replies guys.

carusoracer - i'm on a budget and can't really afford to get a new two channel pre + subwoofer amplifier.  additionally, my speaker wire runs are in the wall and go all the way around the room, so I need an amplifier that takes a high level input signal (off of jumpers from speaker wire connecting the reciever to the gallos).

weirdo - i saw this gallo subwoofer amplifier too, but it's kind of large and noisy i heard in addition to being expensive.  i would love to get a subwoofer but we already have one in the other room for ht (about 40 feet away) and there's no way the wife is letting me put another one.  did you try or listen to the pe amp?

stercom - did you try any other amplifiers before you selected the gallo sa?
