The Janus Shunt Regulator; Aikido PSU

Guys,

A number of AC'ers have asked what power supply would I use for my Aikido or recommend to them.  Many of these AC'ers were looking for something relatively easy to tackle without much circuit design or analysis.  I had suggested to at least one person that I was working on details for my own Aikido and when I had all the nuts and bolts worked out, I would share schematic and parts list.

Well Broskie beat me to it.  I half expected he would, as he gave me the impression some time ago that he would ultimately offer a Janus SR board.  But he went a step further and took care of rectification (tube!) and heaters as well.  Not to mention even picking an inexpensive (but well made) transformer to go with.

Janus Shunt Regulator Kit

Looks like he only has 10 boards, but it looks like that is just an initial offering.  I'd guess he is gearing up to order a lot more boards.  For those who want a simple solution, order his kit with all the parts and tubes already bundled together.

I had a slightly different idea in mind, but it was also centered around the Janus topology.  I was planning to use a 6EM7/6EA7 in lieu of the 12DW7, damper diodes instead of the 5AR4/etc and a choke input passive filter using inexpensive triad chokes.  However, his board is nice and compact and has all the provisions accounted for, mine would require point to point construction.  Buy his and support his site!

I will still share my design when it finally gets worked out.  Given my snails pace of progress on recent projects that might be a while.

Josh,

I just read about it this morning as well. My Aikido is/was supposed to be a 6SN7 with a 6BX7. I also personally empathize with damper diodes, don't have the time to deal with all the NOS that 5AR4 lovers crave (besides Damper diodes are superior in their objective ratings). Choke input would be the way to go. It would be nice if he can offer *just* the regulator and not the pre-regulator section.

Best,
Anand.

Actually, it would be trivial to not wire in the caps at the input and do your own passive filter off board.  Ditto with the heater regulation.  The fact that it is there if you so choose is great though!  I will probably be ordering one of these boards myself.

I hate leaving stuff out and 'blank' but I know exactly what you mean. I just have too many other projects going, but it looks like a great regulator from the outset.
