What's wrong with my system?
« on: 3 Feb 2007, 11:45 pm »
Recently I've been getting static coming through my right speaker. It's fairly intermittent. Some days I can listen for hours with no static, but most of the time it happens in spurts. It happens when I listen at high and low volumes.

Is this typical of a speaker or amp malfunction? I know it's not the source as I have swapped two different CD players with the same interference. Unfortunately, I don't have any other speakers or amps to hookup to try and isolate the problem.

So what's the deal?

Switch speaker connections. If it goes to the other speaker, it's not the speakers.

Are all your connections tight on the speakers and amps ?

Interconnects secure ?

Speaker cables and Interconnects clean or oxidized ?

Maybe a tube going bad ?  Not sure if you are using solid state or tube amps in your system as you didn't mention that.

This should help if you follow it carefully.

Maybe you have a dirty volume or balance pot that needs a shot of tuner douche.

This may seem dumb at first. Turn your cell phone/Blackberry OFF. The GMM (or what ever it is) ones Can make a huge noise whenever they "call home"...John

I've switched the speakers and after 2 hours of listening I've yet to hear any static. :?

But... I guess this is a good thing...maybe. I don't know.

I was hoping that it was the speakers(Tyler Audio Taylos) and not the amp (Jungson JA-88D) as I was planning on upgrading my speakers in the near future.

As of now Mark Sandman and Morphine are coming in crystal clear. 8)

Well the static is back and it's coming through the same channel after I switched the speakers, so I guess my Jungson is to blame. :(

Now I have to find someone who can work on this amp. I've tried cleaning out the innards with a can of compressed air but that didn't seem to do too much. My place is really dusty so I was thinking maybe some dust was causing the static, but who knows. Can dust cause this sort of problem? Hopefully I'll find a way around this because I really like this amp. I got it used a little over a year ago and it has really transformed my system; best upgrade I've made yet in my short audiophile life.

Is this a tube amp? Maybe it's a tube. I have had that with a 12AX7 Groove Tube.

Hi,

I bet there are problems either with output caps or with resistors around the caps (maybe one channel). It happened to my left speaker too before but since I replaced all new caps for tube filaments and power supply caps the static sound is less and gone when the tube amp is warming up.
Another solution is trying out the passive preamp like Promitheus Audio TVC passive preamp if you have a chance. I am using TVC now in my system there is dead quiet hiss, hum, static you name it... Good luck.
