Phono pre-amp for Candela
« on: 20 Jul 2007, 06:28 pm »
I am currently using a Tempest Extreme with my Extreme Mono Blocks. I am considering changing over to the Candela preamp, but I will need a phono pre to go with it. I haven't heard any other phono preamp and am wondering which phono preamps will do better than the Tempest Extreme phono section. I use a Shelter 90X cartridge. Any help is greatly appreciated.  :)

When I first got my Candella, I was using a Wright WP100, and the sound was very lush and smooth. But I quit using it because it was picking up a Mexican radio station every Sunday evening! Replaced it with an AVA tubed preamp (his best one), and the thing is dead quiet. Maybe just ever so slightly thinner than the Wright in the upper bass. Both are for M.M. cartridges, but both seem to have more than enough gain. With both of them I used nothing but Zu cables.

I'm considering the PS Audio GCPH, maybe one modded from Chris Johnson. Any ideas how well it would work with the Candela or if the GCPH is better than the phono section of the Tempest Extreme?

Thanks,
Rick
