Cornet2 power supply
« on: 18 Aug 2007, 04:01 pm »
I expect that one of the most important requirements for a PSU in a phono-stage is that it be real quiet.  If this is true, then the PSU in the Cornet2 must be of a robust and quiet design.  In fact, I have never seens a PSU in which the rectified AC comes out of the rectifer and back into the a secondary transformer winding, with its center-tap feeding B+. Then a cimply cap input filter.

This is that case with the Cornet2 PSU (otherwise I have misread the schematic).  What current is the Cornet2 capable of sustaining?

I am interested in the possibility of using a similar type of PSU in my Aikido pre-amp which uses four 6SN7s and a current draw of around 30mA.  Right now, I use a complicated choke input filter with two 20H chokes which is overkill and the low current draw, I expect does not make for the quietest B+.  At some time, maybe next year, I'll want to re-house my Aikido, and may implement a new PSU.

By the way, my Cornet2 keeps getting better (about 80 hours on it so far).  I ought to post a few pictures of it.

Regards,
Charlie

YES ! You should post pictures. What are you teasing us. I am building the kit also and like to look at
what others are doing. So y :oes please post pictures with info on what tubes you are using.....please..DK

Nothing wrong with the complicated choke filters.  I'll probably do all my new designs that way.  For a really good power supply design, download the TRUMPET manual.

Jim,

I tried to download the PDF of the Trumpet manual.  I kept getting errors, maybe there's a problem with it, maybe not.

I'd appreciate being able to look to the schematic for the PSU.  Right now, I have a very small amount of hum in my Aikido.  I can only really hear it when everything is quiet, although it does seems to vary slightly in volume.  The transformer - a Hammond 269AX does hum slightly when power is turned on, so it could be simple mechanical coupling to the tubes via the PCB.  I will mount remount the transformer with dampers and wired earth.  I may also mount the PCB using rubber grommits, and get some silicone gaskets to place around the tubes.  If all else fails, I may by a universal primary 125-0-125 so that I can use 120V input.  Also the 300 series of transformers seem to be slightly higher quality than the 200 series.

Charlie
