My wife and kids were away this week, so I moved all my equipment to a comfy space in the basement where it would be nice and easy to set everything up in a way that would let me experiment a little.  And do you know what I discovered?  I'm just not very good at this whole audiophile thing. Didn't seem to matter what I hooked up, I got too involved listening to the music that I ended up forgetting to take much note of anything.

However...

I had the Redgum playing in the system for a couple of weeks prior to this.  About a day after I put it in there (replacing my CI Audio VMB1 monoblocks and the Space-tech-labs QA001 preamp), I asked my wife what she thought.  She said that it didn't seem to have the same "bounce".  I tended to agree that it didn't seem quite as dynamic - just a little reserved or something.  But that was immediately out of the box.  After that I did a lot of listening late at night.  Not a lot of volume.  I was impressed with the clarity the amp presented.  And the bass drive.  I found myself appreciating the bass lines on old rock tunes more.  At least, that's how it seemed at that time.

The biggest problem I have with my system comes from the slightly edgy high frequencies.  I gather this may be primarily the work of the Fostex drivers in the Omega Super 3 XRSs, and may be greatly improved when I replace the Fostex drivers for Louis's new hemp drivers.  However, with the current drivers I tended to think that this harshness in the treble was emphasized by the Redgum amp.  Things seems a little sweeter with my tube pre-amp and the gainclone amps.

Anyway, the system is still set up in the basement, and I may take a chance to do a little direct comparison in the next couple of days.  I'll report back soon.

Chad,

IMHO if you replace the Fostex's with the Hemps, the edgy high freq. problem will no longer concern you. :) On the down side, you will have to undergo another break-in. The $200 for new drivers will be the best possible investment for your system.

I'm late to the party but just wanted to chime in and congratulate Chad on his very good fortune.

I can relate to Chad as I am the owner of a REDGUM RGi120 (the bigger brother of Chad's newest addition), having won it last year in the enjoythemusic contest   :thumb:

It has replaced my long term YBA Integre DT in my 2nd system and, after living with this Aussie gem for over a year now, I can vouch for its most excellent sound.  It's a highly impressive piece of gear built to perform for decades.

Pneumonic,
If you are saying the redgum is better than the YBA - that's very strong praise, as that YBA is about as nice as any solid state amp I've heard.

Not saying it's better Russ, but, it's different.

I owned my Integre for close to a decade and it's been one of the pieces that I have owned the longest.  For years it powered my ML Sequels with great synergy and success. Then I got back into tubes and the YBA took a backseat and ended up in my 2nd system powering (mostly) a pair of Castle Chesters. I ended up trading my Chesters for a pair of Elipson Circee's and they didn't work as well with the Integre. But this REDGUM is awesome with the Elipson's.

As well, the REDGUM shines with my ML Quests, accentuating the glorious mids of the Quests like I have rarely heard and tightening up the Quests bass much better than my Sonic Frontiers gear does. Though the REDGUM falls short of the pleasantness of sound I get out of my Sonic Frontiers.

One area of the REDGUM which is totally amazing is the speed with which is amplifies transients. Coupled with the Logan's it's out of this world incredible.
