Allan Holdsworth, I.O.U.

It was like Christmas for me today:  I got three CDs in the mail today, one of them being Allan Holdsworth's superb "I.O.U."  I've been looking for this disc for well over a decade, only finding it d/t some invaluable assistance from Mike G.  Luckily it showed today, new in the wrapper, totally pristine.

Not having heard the album in many years, I was curious to see if it was the masterpiece I'd remembered it to be; in this instance, my memory was good!  This disc is even better than I remembered.  The guy is a frickin' genius, just flat out brilliant.  I'd call most of his stuff fusion, with some cuts a little jazzier and some leaning more towards rock.  With the first track, "The Things You See When (You Haven't Got Your Gun)", I had a smile on my face.  "Where Is One" and "Shallow Sea" feature some astonishing guitar work, and singer Paul Williams is the perfect compliment to the mercurial, legato guitar playing of Holdsworth.

Thanks again to MG for the heads up.

Rob,

You inspired me to pull my copy of IOU out. That is a great album (actually it was called an EP when it came out if I remember correctly - I stilll have the vinyl as well as a CD copy). I think my favorite AH CD remains Metal Fatigue, though. Devil Takes The Hindmost has one of the greatest solos of all time IMHO.

I had it on cassette ( :o ) and looked for the disc since I got my first player!  I've heard some of his other stuff, back when I was a jock on the college station at the U of SD.  I think the next one I buy will probably be Sands, but I'll definately check out Metal Fatigue, too.  Somehow I've never heard it before, but I've heard good things about it.

Now there's only about one disc left on my "Most Wanted" list that I've never been able to find on CD:  Platinum Blonde's "Alien Shores".  I know it exists but I can never track a copy down.  Okay, I also want White Tiger's debut on CD, but I've now got a very good copy from my LP to CD-R, so that can maybe wait awhile.

Any other Holdsworth recommendations?  Thanks.

Just listened to some samples of his cd, "The Sixteen Men of Tain". Sounds similar to the music  by Terje Rypdel. Jazzy, a little dark. I've got  TR's cd "Chaser". Thats a nice cd.  :?:  Are you familiar with him ?

In case you are having trouble finding Metal Fatigue (for 8 bucks even!):

www.waysidemusic.com

They also have a lot of Gong (both the psychedelic and jazz periods), as well as Gongzilla ("Suffer" has Holdsworth on it, and Gary Husband is on a few albums). This is a fantastic Progressive music resource.

His CD Wycliffe Tower is even more impressive. The drummer on some of the tunes is so fluid that I don't think he plays the same thing twice. Great playing by the entire band on this one.
