Power handling?
« on: 10 Jul 2007, 01:03 pm »
What's the power handling on the super 3 xrs and similar speakers? I'm lucky enough to just have gotten a pair used, and I'm used to planar speakers which, almost literally have no limit to how loud they can go except for what your amp is capable of. So sitting here with my super 3 xrs and a 50wpc ss amp, obviously they're really "tearing shit up" with the volume knob only up to 9 oclock, but darn the drivers are so tiny, any higher and I feel like they're going to explode.. but I still want them louder! Regards, Rudy.

aa   I am the owner of a pair of Dipole XRS's.  It has been my experience that the more power you feed the Hemptone Driver's the happier they are.
I would call up Louis at Omega Speakers to confirm.

P.S. Don't the Speakers sound good!!

In the context of high eff speakers is this question just how much power is needed to sound correct at a certain volume or is it how much power can they handled without distortion?

I would like the question about how these speakers sound with an output of say 75dB and what power would be required to supply that with major excursion near 90dB.

Hi rudylwilliam,

Many thanks for your post and great to hear you’re enjoying the XRSs. The big question is which drivers do your XRSs have?

There are some Fostex based speakers out there and this makes a huge difference in how much they can handle. The hemp drivers are dark green in color. They also can handle much more power and really like it. You can turn them up to loud levels to a point. 50-watt amps are not a problem.

The hemp-based speakers do like high-powered amps.

Thanks,
Louis
