Amp for sub woofer....QSC????

I am still searching for the best amp for my Infinity RS 1-B's.  I am using a Perreaux 3150B (bought it used) and it is quit good.  However, there is a hum coming form one channel and I am a bit concerned of it;s age.
I am curious about the QSC line.....what do you folks say for it's use at the woofer level?

Really nice amps.  Very well constructed and nice looking.  Just replace the stock fan with a quiet one and bob's your uncle.  I figure an amp designed to take a beating at live gigs will be so understressed in a home environment that there won't be too many reliability concerns.  The one I use on my sub has more headroom than my neighbors would bear! :)  Also, pro gear offers logistical features you don't get on hifi gear.

The QSC add on eq module might help you tame any low frequency room modes you might have as well.

I have only heard a QSC amp once, at the Midwest Audiofest this past spring in the Bolder Cables/ Teres turntable/ 8th Nerve room, but was impressed that I did not notice any amp or fan noise, and the speaker system of VMPS 626R speakers and VMPS larger sub sounded great.  The QSC amp was on the sub.

The amp did have the add on module and the eq was tweaked by Wayne Wanaanen of Bolder with a mic and computer software.

It seems like a great way to go.

If you have a spare $1000 and want to pick up a Crown K2 off ebay, that would be a pretty good way to go too.

Hello,

I'm currently using an NAD 218 amplifier bridged to 700w mono to drive a VMPS larger subwoofer - the headroom and good damping factor of the amplifier makes it a good match for driving subwoofers.  It also runs without noise, and doesn't get hot.

I've used an Adcom 555 II with an SVS 20-39 that I used to own, but didn't enjoy the combination.  When I later swapped out the Adcom for an old Marantz SS amp from the 70's, I noticed an enormous improvment in the quality of bass.  I know other people recommend Adcom, but I found it to be thin sounding for subwoofer applications.

Regards,

Rup

Hi.....thanks for responding to my question on Audio Circle.  We e-mailed each other recently.  I was interested in auditioning the R-40 Vmps speakers.  When does your showroom open?  We can also discuss the amps!

I listened to some of the QSC amps but the stock fan was too loud for my tastes.  I forgot the name of the tech at QSC who recommended that you could change the fan to quieter panaflo or pabst fan, but I ended up getting a crown K2 to power my sub.  I HATE fans, my old Cinepro used to drive me nuts when the fans would come one.  However, the QSC did ROCK... it is definitely a value leader in my opinion.

 I did forget to mention that Wayne of Bolder had replaced the stock fan in his QSC with a low db one.

rwd,

There have been delays with shipment overseas of the furniture, and also with some of the components I'd like to have when the showroom is available.  Additionally, I lost most of my website content due to the loading of the website during the blackout - I worked off the server (not the brightest idea in hindsight), and was doing so with the files when we had this power outage.

I hate to open my doors until every detail is correct to my satisfaction, so unfortunately my timetables are pushed back a couple weeks.  I will be sure to PM, and post, when everything is ready to go.

Kind Regards

Rup

coulda been the combo w/the svs', or even a faulty adcom amp.  i used a pair of original 555's (pre-ll iteration, supposedly better, according to those who mod these), to drive my vmps larger subs, & they worked great.  almost as well as the present pair of electrocompaniet aw75dmb's i'm now using...   :)

also, may wanna try the dirt-cheap art sla amps that have been receiving good user feedback.  they're only ~$200 from a place like fullcompass.com...

also may yust wanna consider repairing the perreaux - these are supposed to be killer sub amps in their own right.

btw, i found the adcoms worked better instereo mode than bridged - a tad tighter sound.  even when i used only one channel of each amp for each sub, prior to adding separate binding posts for each of the subs' two drivers.
