Help setting up HagUSB w/ an Infrant server
« on: 10 Jul 2007, 09:15 pm »
hey all,

i got my HagUSB and was able to get it working via my laptop, but not via my Infrant server.  I'm guessing this is partly because I'm not able to really run any software off the Infrant, or install the drivers.  Is that right?  I looked and it looks like the Infrant allows me to run SlimServer (which I've heard is awful slow) and iTunes.  Has anyone setup an Infrant to drive the HagUSB directly? If not... what do folks think of running a wicked long USB cable to the Hag? Is this asking for trouble in terms of quality?

I ran the HagUSB into a Wadia 27 DAC w/ GNSC mods and honestly it didn't sound as good as my VSE Level 5+ modded Sony DVP 9000es.  Not a nice thing to think about with the money I've dropped on the setup. If I could make it more convenient, it might be worth the trade off.

hey Jim,

Infrant NAS server is a media file server, doesn't run WindowsXP.  I don't think it's going to work as a direct connection with the HagUSB, mostly because the Infrant can't run Foobar and can't take an ASIO driver, etc. So, I'm just getting a couple 16' long USB cables + an active hub and will run it off my laptop. Should work.

After adjusting settings in Foobar to 16 bits + ASIO and using EAC to rip, I'm getting some pretty good sound. It's close to or just as good as my VSE Level 5+ modded Sony, but that's also using a much more expensive DAC.  The Hag is really just to hold me over until I get the Offramp from Empirical Audio, we'll see how they compare.

thanks again for building a super product for such a great price...

I don't have any experience comparing a hi-end cdp to the HagUSB, but I do run 30' of USB cable from my computer to the HagUSB with no problems. The  resolution is good enough that I can tell the difference using different media players and ASIO drivers.

What I hear:

Windows Media Player - average, non-involving sound
Foobar2000 - clearer, getting better
Foobar2000 with ASIO4All - better yet using the free ASIO driver, Windows KMixer still adds a bit of haze
Foobar2000 with usb-audio driver - best sound yet, all of the Windows drivers are bypassed.

I get my cables from monoprice, their stuff is excellent quality

Good to hear the HagUSB is close to an expensive CD player/transport.
