New mods and price changes coming in June
« on: 23 May 2007, 03:12 pm »
I have been very busy trying to keep up with mods for the last few months.

At the same time, I have been doing a bit of R&D for some new products and another level of mods for the SB3.

With the dollar not doing so well against the Euro , major increases in copper, silver and gold and constant increases in gas prices, my costs on quite of few items have gone up quite a bit. Along the way, I have been incorporating new ideas in the mods and not increasing the pricing. I have absorbed them as long as possible. I am afraid it is no longer possible to do.

In June there will be an across the board increase in prices for the SB mods and most of the cable products.

I will also be (finally) simplifying the options for the SB mods. I will be introducing a new level of mods for the SB. This will be my "Statment" product. It will use some new parts and some different ways of using some of the same parts

In response to some questions about the Statement level of mods:

Upgrades for current and previous levels of mods to the SB3 and SB2 to the Statement level will also be offered.

Firm pricing for the mods have not been set yet.

Some of the changes in the mods will entail the use of the Super-E configuration of BlackGate caps, different bypass caps in the analog output section and gold wire.  :D

Wayne, I'll be waiting patiently to find out if there will be any Statement version of digital mods for the SB3, beyond what you've already done for my unit.

I've been thinking about it for a while, a long while, but this was the nudge I needed.  I just placed an order for the digital only mod with a Slipstream purifier.

Anyone care to tell me how great it's going to sound when I get it back?

Can you describe the sonic benefits of gold wire?  Or is this just to prevent corrosion?

Wayne,

If I overnited my SB3 how much time for the basic digital mod, only had mine maybe a month- hard to live without.

thanks,

Solid gold wire has a fullness of tone that is fairly similar to the same tone one hears from vinyl and tubes. There is more lower midrange/upper bass "richness".

Solid gold wire is also hard to find and VERY expensive. I am also trying out some gold alloy wire to see if this might come close.

1000a,

You should wait until the week of June 18th. I have quite a few commitments for mods and personal matters that have me booked up until that time.

You can place an order now with a credit card to reserve the current price. You will not be charged until the unit ships back to you.

I should be able to turn your unit around within two weeks of receiving it, as long as I have all the parts on hand. Right now, I do have everything needed to do a digital mod.

Wayne - I've been told the Mundorf wire is very good though of course expensive.  You might want to give that a look if you haven't already.  Looking forward to seeing what the "Statement" is all about in due time  aa

What I am working on for the Statement, is the internal power supplies and analog section.

The internal power supply mods will help improve the sound of the digital output.

I have been implementing some changes in the digital circuit in the mods for the last month or so.

I was thinking of offering the SC transformer as part of the "Statement" digital mod, but I did not feel including it in the digital path was in any way an improvement. I have found that the changes in the power supply make a larger difference in the sound of the unit.

I may offer an ONLY digital mod that will remove all of the analog section. Right now, I feel that would be a mistake as I have yet to hear an external DAC that sounds as good as the modded analog output.

The Statement mods will not be offered until late June.

I was looking into some gold wire a couple months ago to make a short interconnect with and found plenty through various jewelry supply houses, -- expensive, yes $3 per inch and up -- I didn't buy any because I didn't know what level of annealing is appropriate.  I would hate to spend the money only to find the wire stresses and breaks easily.

Doid somebody say mundorf makes some gold wire for audio use?  Any idea on where to find it?

Thanks,

Jim

OT: Consider contacting JD at Jade Audio (contact information at the 'Gon); he's spent considerable time researching and using different gold wire in his interconnects. Cheers, bw

Hi Jim,

I bought some of this Mundorf hook up wire to use in a power supply unit I am planning on building for the SB3.  I do not know what the results will be but it looks pretty interesting.

Thanks guys.

I just bought a couple pairs of cryo'ed Edison Price binding posts from them for my new speakers/OXOs depending on which way I go, and Lee was very helpful and great to deal with.

My Bolder modded SB3 (digital mod with the copper purifier) arrived here at work a couple of hours ago.  I can't wait to get home and start the burn-in process!

Thanks for the quick turn-around Wayne. :thumb:
