distance from Cornet2 to turntable
« on: 21 Jun 2007, 01:12 am »
My parts for the Cornet2 are now on order and my new Rega P2 has arrived.  I am thinking of mounting both turntable and Cornet2 on a single shelf, with Cornet2 and the left and turntable on the right.

Are there any issues about placing the Cornet2 and turntable in close proximity?  The tonearm and wiring on the turntable will be on the opposite side of the turntable to the Cornet2, which will be in a steel chassis.

Any ideas?

ALSO, due to my room configuration, I will have to mount the shelf slight above my TV set.  It is a regular TV.  The turntable will be over the TV.  Assumming that I will probably not want to play records with the TV on, does a switched-off TV pose any interference risks to the turntable/Cornet2 combo?  Most modern TV's tend to use a standby mode rather than full switch-off, so I guess that part of the TV will be powered-up even when supposedly switched-off?

Again, any ideas?

Thanks,

Charlie

Keep the Cornet2 away from the turntable motor.  Right side may be more appropriate.

Use shielded interconnects with the grounds open at the TT end if possible.

Watch for ground loops between the TT drive motor and the Cornet2.  You'll know 'em when you hear 'em.

Check for hum with the arm/cartridge close to the spindle.  It's closer to the drive motor this way.

You have to be close and far at the same time.  Keep the power transformer as far away from the cartridge and wiring as you can.  Make the phono cable as short as possible.

The thing to watch out for with the TV is the degauss coil on power-up.  Unless it is a flat panel.  The large magnetic field can leave an imprint on things.  My kids have erased innumerable VCR tapes.  I have no idea what happens to an MM cart in the same situation.  Degaussing can be both good and bad.
