I fried my SM 6.9
« on: 20 Aug 2003, 09:40 pm »
The other night I dropped an interconnect cable behind my equipment rack and the damn metal plug at the end landed right smack across the binding posts of one of my LeAmps (please refer to Murphy's Law for reason why the cable had such perfect aim).  :cuss:

Instantly very loud harsh noise started issuing from the front end of my SM 6.9 and a small amount of smoke issued from the port on the back.   :(

I am now in the process of getting the amp fixed by IRD's service center (at least it's right here in town   8) )  but I have no idea how to figure out what got fried in my 6.9.

The speaker will play when connected to a functioning amp, but at much lower volume than normal.  I only hooked it to a good amp for a minute , so I can't really comment on the quality of the sound that it produced, but my initial impression was that it was OK, just soft.

Does anybody have any sugestions how I can determine what got fried in the 6.9?
Does anybody have any suggestions where in Charlotte I could get it repaired?

P.S.  Whenever I contemplate the resaon I had some components on when I was messing with the cables on the vcr----- :banghead:

"When it rains, it pours".

I suggest that you email your question directly to Michael Barnes. He should know best what to do.

Recently happened to my B&K. I dropped an RCA and either hit the Heatshink Fin or the RCA Shorted.

Asked B&K to send fuses which I recieved today, but they were the wrong ones.

It helps to have good protective cicuitry!

Later!

I would guess a capacitor in the crossover caused the smoke. maybe if you are "lucky" it took the heat (pun intended). Email mbarnes - he will give his guess as to what was damaged. include a link to this topic if you can.

I'm thinking your crossover fried rather than one of the drivers.
That's a best case senario really, since it would relatively easy to fix...
good luck...

I e-mailed M. Barns last night.  He thinks that I blew the woofer.  I'll spend some time this weekend swapping components with my other speaker to try and figure out what part got damaged.

I had a loose IC fry up my tweeter on the sm6.9.  That was an easy fix.  All I had to do is replace the driver.  If you have to do xover work....that will be a bitch.  You have to remove the woofer and unglue the xo board, then find someone to fix it.

Good luck,
