High quality Electrolytic Capacitors
« on: 21 Feb 2007, 11:35 pm »
Does anyone knows where to get Panasonic or equivalent capacitors in Australia at a good price?

I know RS component and Farnell sell them, they are rather expensive.

The values I am interested in are 100uF and 10,000mF @50Vdc.

I was able to get LM3886 integrated chipamp at a very good price, @ $5.10 each incl. GST. Anyone interested let me know I will post the contact name and no here.

Hi ttan,

What application do you have in mind for the caps?

I've got to admit that I import all my parts but maybe it's time to get together a list of useful local suppliers.

I think JohnR might have done this early in the existence of The Pie so maybe I can assemble some of the ideas from the past along with suggestions from current Pie watchers, into a sticky.

Any thoughts out there in Aus.?

I am surprised no one responded to my posting.

RS and farnell are notoriously expensive, eg the LM3886 they sell for AUD$13-14 each I can get them for about AUD$5 include GST. I bought them through local National distributor, 6 units in my purchase.

Many years ago I was able to get wima poly polypropylene capacitors and roederstein resistors at a very good price. I am surprised no one are getting through the local distributors. One disadvantage is one must get them at a minimum purchase or quantity, and not 1 or 2 units in that case RS and Farnell are more convenient.

cheers...

Well, we're a small market so it's probably not surprising that low demand, high cost parts aren't easy to find. It's also true that it's often cheaper to do the importing yourself even when the parts are available here.

Here's an incomplete list of possible Aus. sources:

Soundlabs, Sydney ... www.soundlabs.com.au

Sonic Art ... www.sonicartaudio.com/

Farnell ... www.farnellonline.com

Dick Smith ... www.dse.com.au

Radio Spares ... rsaustralia.com

Radio Parts ... www.radioparts.com.au

Any further contributions welcome  :thumb:

Here's some more:

WES http://www.wescomponents.com/

Altronics http://www.altronics.com.au/

DIY Audio Store http://www.diyaudiostore.com/

Overseas:

Michael Percy http://www.percyaudio.com/

Minisemi http://www.minisemi.com/

PartsConnexion http://www.partsconnexion.com/

For overseas stuff you could always get a group buy going to help cover shipping.

A supplier would have to be nuts to carry exotic parts in Oz as the DIY market is not well supported as most will import their own components at cheaper prices. DIYers are basically tight, want it cheap and wouldn't pay the true price.

I have thought about bringing in capacitors but the cost of buying it overseas is so cheap and it's hard to move a lot of stock in Australia.

sorry I didn't include you in my list navi but rabbitz has set things right. Thanks for the contributions rabbitz.

As stated previously, I'll be making this list into a sticky. Any additions are still welcome along with any comments on particular specialties, services and user friendliness [to borrow a term].

bit busy at the moment .....

I just bought some good(not high) quality, eg, Elna, Roedenstein, off Ebay, these are new old stocks at a very good price, less then the retail price, esp from RS components. eg 5600uF for $2.20 compare to $12.00 for 10,000uF from RS components. I am using them for building 6 channels amp. I will report if quality is not good.

I find components from Farnell are general cheaper than RS. Just bought some op amp from them eg. AD818(single) and AD828(dual) about $8.00 each very reasonable for this type of op-amp, it sounds quite good, do try them, a direct replacement of any I to V op-amp in DAC or Cd player.
