DIFFERENCE BETWEEN CHANNEL ISLANDS AND EXODUS
« on: 19 Apr 2007, 03:17 am »
What are the differences between the two modules? Looking for the best quality, transparent amplification for mixing and mastering. Research on Class D would show they sound nice, and particularly the hypex design.

Thanks,

Dave

If your asking about differences on the modules themselves, the answer would be probably very little.   I have no way of knowing exactly what other vendors are modifying and changing.   That would be up to the vendor.   I do very little to the stock Hypex design because there just isn't much you can do without some sort of tradeoff.   Hypex is continually updating the modules and Bruno & Jan-Peter are more in the loop on circuit changes, design and the trade-offs of using various components.

On the power supplies, layout and other items you will find more differentiation.   I use the Hypex power supplies also in many of my designs which is more expensive, but it is a total Hypex solution.   I use my own transformers which I've had built and my own softstart module.

I don't know if that answers your question.    I also have several models so the answer would depend upon which solution your looking at.

Kevin, that is an interesting point... is there a "change log" somewhere that documents what changes they've made and the specific benefits realized?

Thanks!

No change log that I'm aware of.   There are normal production changes in any product.   You make some adjustments on PCB runs due to supplier changes, and some due to possible improvements in a design.   Most of the time you never know about them.   Due to the DIY nature of this product every change has been under the microscope.

Well, perhaps I should clarify. It's interesting that Channel Islands say that they will be developing a 400w into 8ohm monoblock, but they specifically state that they aren't using the UcD700...due to reasons including the "sound" quality. I haven't heard of any direct comparison of these two brands...Some people say Channel Islands are doing exclusive modifications to the UcD design and implementing fair pricing, others say that that's ridiculous and it's really all marketing hype, while you can easily achieve and surpass yourself...

All your thoughts and comments are greatly appreciated.

If you search around here enough, you will find out exactly what CIA are doing to the modules.  I think it would be inappropriate of me to post the changes however.  As I say at work all day, do your due diligence and you will find your answer.  Try a thread relating to EVS, icepower, and hypex.

This industry is like any other.   It is competitive and your not going to say something in public (unless your an idiot like me) to damage your sales.

Look at the basic UcD circuit.   What are you going to change?   Most of the changes I've done relate to the power supply.   In that regard I've not cut any corners.   If someone has a magic tweak that "sounds better" that is a very subjective statement.   When they have a financial position in a product selling then their EVERYTHING they do to a product makes it "sound better".    If a company uses the module stock do you think they would announce it to the world?   Do you think Hypex goes out of their way to make the stock unit sub-standard so that it can be improved upon?   They don't, they have been working on optimizing it since the day it was released and will continue to do so.    They leave as little to "tweak" to the OEM as possible.
