I remember his performance at the Berlin Wall... the falling of...thereso billed.
The Old Guard is shrinking... their legacy of music will remain with us...should we care for it.
RIP.  :(

I saw and heard him in rehearsal with the Victoria Symphony back in 1973. He was playing a Shostakovich cello concerto which had been written for him. Every few bars the conductor would stop and ask Rostropovich how it sounded until finally, he gave over the whole rehearsal to Rostropovich so he coud talk directly to the orchestra, rather than the conductor pointlessly relaying Rostropovich's comments.

I found myself almost being pulled off the seat (I was in the balcony) by Rostropovich's pianissimo passages. One of those very rare and valuable musical experiences.

was setting out on the deck drinking coffee and reading Saturday's paper when I ran accross the obituary. I just sat there speaking his name over and over to myself thinking the world will never really understand what a great loss it has just suffered. This fellow was as important as any musician in the last fifty years. The only ones I can compair him to would be Toscanini and Rachminoff. May God be with him!

I read this in the Sydney Morning Herald on Saturday. I have dug out my recording of his Bach Cello Suites and will play through them this week.
