B,

Finally got his ace photographer Amerigo Vespuci to haul out his trusty NiKon GinyFlex Camera and shoot the first pictures of the VSS SubWoofer in EBONY.

Take a look :o

While physically smaller than the Larger Sub the VSS outweighs it by 30 lbs.  Shipping weight is nearly 190 lbs with the plate amp built in.

How come it doesn't have a phase plug like the 12" megawoofer?

Any reason why the driver is off center?

Are there any photos of the VLA cabinets at the factory?

Any reason why the driver is off center?

I did hear B, telling someone that Off Center drivers created some advantage in unequal length waves within the cabinet, and less problems.

While B, can certainly explain this with the technical details, consider that this is not a "completely sealed" design in that the only output is from the active driver.

It has a Passive Radiator.  This passive "reacts" to the internal positive and negative pressure levels.  If the driver is perfectly centered as in a sealed sub, it will experience cancellations/accentuation's of certain resonances.

If it is "off center" then some of that is ameliorated.

Now B, can step in and tell you why it is really that way

Driving the baffle asymmetrically is indeed a resonance control device.

Since the phase plug is most effective at higher frequencies, and the VSS is intended for use up to only 70Hz, we did without the phase plug.

John,
Thanks for the answer. I was just curious because this is the first sub design that I've seen with the driver off center. :)

Any reason why the driver is off center?

Full size window brace had to go somewhere...I assume it's directly to the left of the active 15"...

And all along I thought they were off center because  when Brian designed them he was in such a sense of euphoria from the sound of the V60s that he couldn't see straight!  :duh:
