Moscode and Modwright

Has anyone heard or tried the Moscode 401HR with Dan's preamp? Just curious if they jive well together.

That's good to know. I don't own either right now, just trying to figure out an amp and preamp combo that will work good together with my Piega C8ltd speakers and Bolder modded SB3.

The Modwright has all the features I am looking for, HT bypass, two sets of outputs and remote.

I had these together for a short period and Tvad is correct on the gain sensitivity.   I also found them to be a bit on the analytical side together.  Caveat; I used the Modwright totally stock and attempted no tube rolling or other tweaks, and the Moscode was only a few eeeks in my system at that point.  I ended up with another pre, but in no way want to express anything other than total respect for Dan and his products, just didn't have synergy in my system at that point and I wanted to stay with the Moscode...YMMV of course...

You know what was great sounding with the Modwright that I also owned at the time?

I would try pairing the Modwright and the CI Audio D-200's.

I have heard this combo and thought it was quite good.

What about a good passive preamp and the Moscode?

My experience is somewhat different, and ended up sending the 401HR back (not the Modwright).  I had the 401HR in my system for the full 33 days, and with my SWL 9.0 SE it was not musical enough for me, no distinguishing characteristics...just not toe-tapping and warm-but-not cozy; and the bass lost some tautness it had with my more analytical Modwright/Krell combo.  I later put a Bent TAP in the system, but by then the Moscode was sent back.  I think a TAP/Moscode combo would be killer.  Nothing against any of the products..it's all about synergy.  Now that I have a McCormack DNA-500 I am happy with my system, but would love to hear a TAP/Moscode marriage.

The Modwright and CJ MV60SE make a great combination (I own both) if the rated 60wpc (actually closer to 70) of the latter are enough for your Piegas. Half the tubes of the Dodd.

Wonderfull richness and resolution with excellent PRAT and dynamics. Extremely musical combination.

Good luck.

SWL with a DNA 500 is fantastic. I ran a DNA 500 with my Modwright SWL and it was damn near a perfect combo - IMHO.

Sorry to hijack the thread for a second but I had to add my two pennies.

Let's try the Lamm in there and see if we can borrow a big SS momma.  The Lamm doesn't have an HT bypass but it's a good benchmark for tube sound, i.e. do you want a little less or a little more.  I'd say the Modwright represents a little less and there are certainly choices with a little more.

Yeah, it's the LL2 Deluxe.  I got the idea from you, then followed up with all the on-line reviews I could find.  It's a super piece.  I e-mailed you a few weeks back thanking you for the suggestion and asking about tube rolling experiences.

Not to derail, but yes.  It's really spectacular with the Sig. 70s in my setup.

I have read that the D-200's do not sound so good on Piegas.

I was just thinking about this and researching the CIA PLC-1, sounds like it has everything I need.

I'll go for that, I still have the Odyssey Stratos in my living room setup to use.

Some other considerations are the Belles 350A amp/21A preamp combo and a McIntosh MC402 amp with the Modwright pre.

I'd really like to try out a solid state amp and tube pre combo as I think it really takes some balls to drive the Piegas to their full potential. The only tube amp I would even consider is the Modcode hybrid.
