Issues playing some CD's with Slim Server
« on: 31 Mar 2007, 02:06 pm »
Anybody had issues with particular CD's while others are just fine?  I have the Corrine Bailey Rae CD.  First cut rips and converts fine.  Everything else will rip and convert but can't be played.

I tried doing it with the Index Based copying and I got it to play.  But, it doesn't start at the beginning of the song and shows 2 indexes.  The 2nd index is where it's supposed to be - beginning of the song.  When I play it back, it sounds like an old dirty record - clicks and pops, etc.

Any thoughts?  Anybody else have issues with this CD or any others?  I have maybe 10 CDs with this issue - different lables, some old, some new, etc.

What are you ripping with? Are you using the most recent version of Slimserver 6.5.1?

The self titled one.

Using EAC to rip and then the external FLAC plugin.  It's acting like it just can't find the beginning of anything after the first cut.

Bryan:
I haven't used EAC for some time as I switched to a Mac computer but EAC settings can be tricky. I've used this tutorial before and found it very helpful. http://users.pandora.be/satcp/eac-qs-en.htm

I'll take a look at it - maybe it will identify the issue.  I've successfully ripped about 250 CDs and about 10 have this issue.  I'm not thinking it's settings but might be.

I have a very well-recorded orchestral CD that sounds fantastic except for one track, which when played sounds like very loud white noise with occasional loud pops or clicks sufficient to make me fear for my driver's health.  Save for the lone bad track on the one CD, all the tracks from the 4 or 5 CDs ripped during that session sound fine.

The CD plays splendidly elsewhere (car, computer, etc.), bad track and all.  Ripping it again will probably correct whatever's wrong, but I'd love to know what precipitated the problem.

I went back and killed the folder and tried again with a slower gap detect - same thing.  Put in different CD, flawless.  Then another - flawless.  Then back to the CBR, 1st song is fine - the rest won't even transfer to the playlist in SlimServer.

Bryan,
I have this CD and ripped it with EAC and Flac'd it and it plays fine on my Squeezebox.  Just to be sure, I cued it up while typing this up and it's playing just fine.  On track 4 right now with no issues.

So its not the CD - there must be some quirk in your set up.

I have this cd ripped and it plays flawlessly.

No issues on this or any other cd's via FLAC and SqueezeBox.

Bryan,

I also have this CD.  No issues with it either after ripping and converting.  The clicks and pops are in the "mix" to give it that analogue sound.  If you listen through a CD player you will hear the same "issues".

Hi Bryan,

I ran this through Google: "Corinne Bailey Rae Copy Protect", and got the following.

Is it possible you have this import version?

Have you calibrated your read offset with AccurateRip?

It sounds like you might possibly be starting the offending track off on something other than a frame boundary, and calibrating read offset could possibly deal with this, if indeed it is the problem.  Without putting the original CD under the sample-level microscope, it's hard to tell exactly what's going on, but it sure does sound like that first bad track isn't starting where it's supposed to.

Haven't done that yet but need to.  I'm thinking of building a new machine anyway so may wait for that.

Thanks for the help.  It's just a few frustating CD's - most are just fine.  BTW, that tutorial is a great source of information.

I just downloaded the newest EAC, the newest flac, and accuraterip, and I have a new Plextor external firewire/USB drive so I'll be redoing all this today myself.  I'll be really interested to see if I get any improvement in ripping speed with the new drive -- a double-layer DVD capable one that theoretically anyway, should be able to read more accurately.  I don't know if that's bunk or not, but it is what a couple of folks have told me so I'm going to try for myself.

Good luck, and one of these days we'll need to talk about GIK.  I'll also be in St. Louis around the holidays visiting the in-laws and I'm going to try to hook up with some of the GAS folks.
