SB3 V15 stability vs newer firmware
« on: 5 Apr 2007, 12:16 pm »
Not sure if anyone else using an SB3 wirelessly, over long distance (2 full floors between PC and SB3) have noticed that V15 firmware is "less stable" than newer versions?

I use a Linksys WRT54GS, and the PC lives in a spare bedroom on the 2nd floor, at the opposite end of the house to the SB3 in the basement.  I have a fully modded Bolder SB3, which inverts phase, so V15 is usually recommended for that (and many claim it sounds better).  I use the latest Slimserver release (6.5.2 I think) and have found that V15 firmware drops the signal WAY more often than V72.

I have used mgalusha's s/w (thanks again Mike!) to swap it back and forth, and find that V72 is far more stable for me.  I have moved the + and - of the speaker cables, and swapped the phase on the sub, and it sounds good.

Anyone else play around with this, because of this?

All the best,

I'm not having any drop out problems whatsoever running 6.5.2 and V15 with mine. But I'm only running it about 30 feet away.

I tried flipping speaker polarity once, very quickly, early on when I first got my modded SB 3, and didn't hear a difference, but I'd like to try it again sometime and give it another critical listen.

Cheers

hi mark, how's it going?  i have a rather cheap solution to try that i found works pretty good not just for the sb3.  it is a product from netgear called the ac powerline ethernet adaptor.  what it does is it has 2 ac plugs.  one you connect it into your wireless router and the other plug goes to any other location (in your case, near your sb3).  it actually uses your ac wiring as an ethernet connection and you can use it anywhere in your house.  this makes the connect now hardwired, thus elimintaing your "wireless" problem.  i use it for my laptop upstairs since my router is in the basement and i had too many dropouts with wireless.  with this little gadget, i think you can eliminate your dropouts entirely.  i attached a link from an auction on ebay of this unit.  pretty cheap, you might as well buy it and try.

Anthony, I am well, thanks for asking.

An excellent little toy from the look of it, I will absolutely try one of those.  Seems like an interesting solution, and if it works well through my balanced power conditioner.... then I am in!

When can I have you over to experience the wonder of the SB3?

Firmware v72 represents 57 distinct updates since v15, and any one of them may have incorporated multiple fixes and enhancements.  It is a lot more stable.
