Power switch needed?
« on: 10 Apr 2007, 03:26 am »
It it really necessary to have a power and or circuit breaker switch on a active power conditioner?  I'm modding a unit by adding a IEC socket, vibration damping the chassis, removing parts that I don't need like F-Connector/Ethernet pass through and triggers etc.  The black wire on the captured cable enters the unit and goes through a low quality circuit breaker.  Can I safely bypass the circuit breaker and connect the wire directly from the component circuit board to the newly installed IEC?

I just don't understand why anyone would want to sacrifice basic electrical safety for this type of unit, and I really don't think it's in your best interest to do so. Please take a minute and think about the safety of not only yourself, but your family, neighbors and property.

Dan is right.  It isn't safe to bypass the protection circuitry.  You also could run into issues with your insurance company compensating you if anything were to happen if you purposefully tampered with the safety devices in your electronic components.

FWIW, I have heard it said before that circuit breakers are more sonically transparent than fuses.  I like to use breakers of appropriate sizes in my power strips/'conditioners' and amps.  Circuit breakers are also resettable and they are slow-blow naturally.

Dan and Josh thanks for the reply but my basic question still remains.  If I were not to use the conditioner at all and plug my components straight into the wall what protection would there be?  No more or less than if I had the conditioner installed with the circuit breaker bypassed correct?  I'm not bypassing the builtin protection circuits within my components.

I know when to take people's advise I'm just trying to fully understand the why.

Josh do you have a source for a high quality circuit breaker?  My usual spot seem to have power switches only.
