Gedlee Nathan Upgrades?
« on: 24 Apr 2012, 07:46 pm »
I am now enjoying my "FAST" systems very much. So much so that I put the Gedlee Nathan's to storage. I am currently lacking a project so I figured I could upgrade the crossover and maybe make it passive/active capable.
Has anyone done this?  I have been emailing with Earl and he says he uses a MiniDSP which I have but it seems like he will not program mine?  We shall see. Worst case I will just add some bracing and upgrade the coils etc.

You could do it DIY? Measure the drivers etc. Wisest to leave a cap in series with the tweeter.

Yeah, don't hurt to try. Especially when he will only do it if you buy a miniDSP from him. I will probably buy it from him later once I mod the speakers.

I was just reading up on this myself, earl said that the active version measures better but I believe a user has to buy new compression drivers to do it because some things have changed. If that's the case, it's impractical.

What did you replace them with? I've been toying with the idea of messing with my Abbeys as well. I'm curious how an active crossover would compare with a high end version of the passive crossover.

I have not really replaced them but I have sent them to storage. The speaker I am using now is partially documented in the single driver circle.
Also yes, Earl said I would need to replace my DC250 which is a pain. Obvious I would sell mine so there would be an offset. I guess I don't understand why he can't sell filters for the old one.
I don't think I am going to venture back into dealing with them but we shall see.

Development time/cost vs likely sales, presumably.

........you could ship them to my house for, ahem, extended testing.  Yeah, that's the ticket, I'll test them extensively so you'll have a better idea of where to go with your mods when I return them.....someday..... probably soon, or something like that.

Thanks for posting this, I had no idea about the active option as an upgrade till I happened across here. I have a minidsp I am not even using right now... wonder what he would charge for new drivers?

I recently started a thread over on his new forum about the new active crossovers for the Nathans.
Unfortunately the DE 250 have been changed by B&C to the point where Earl has made a crossover adjustment. The active DSP module is only $200 from Earl but he seems uninterested (based on a mathematical formula of time and sales im sure) in configuring the unit for the older version of the DE 250. So we have to buy 2 new ones at slightly discounted 110 each. Which would unfortunately make my really nice upgraded passive crossovers useless...
And yes i think it would be nice to be able to use them both actively and passively.
Im in a holding pattern till i can figure out if its worth it to me, mostly from an effort point of view.
After numerous modifications to the enclosure and a long hiatus in my garage workshop my Nathans are finally at an automotive paint shop getting a pricey House of Kolors paint job. I mostly just want to reassemble them and listen.

Dear abby, dear abby, you got no complaint .............

I'm taking a flyer here but I bet you wrote some ecstatic prose somewhere about your current speakers. If so, go back and read it over, while listening to some soulful, reflective music. Then do it again. Keep doing it over and over until the illusion that you need to make changes passes. Then switch to something more upbeat and open a beer.
