Music ripped question?
« on: 21 Feb 2007, 01:54 am »
I 'm using a SlimDevice wireless SB3 setup which reads from my Seagate 300GB HD which I have approx. 700 CDs ripped.  From time to time, it stops reading in middle of a song &/or it will not skip to the next song ie: stuck at the end of last played song.
What I discovered is if I re-ripped the same track back to the HD, it will play again.  Any ideas or same experience? Has my 1 year old HD reached its prime?  Is this a software thingie?  I using SlimServer 6.2.1 which is stable & works for me & I realised there are newer versions which I 'm hesitant to update at this time.

I'm guessing it is a software problem. I use version 6.5.2 with a similar setup with no problems.

What did you use to do the ripping?  My guess is that you're in MP3 if you have that many CDs on a 300gig drive.  You should try EAC->FLAC.  More accurate ripping and much better sound - but it will take more space.

Yup, I should have mentioned I do my ripping using EAC to FLAC which works well.  I only encoutered a few times when EAC was having difficulty reading some CDs for whatever reasons out of the 700+ done thus far.

Are you using wireless SB3 or is it wired?  I had a problem with my SB3 occassionally pausing, etc. which all went away when I hard wired it.  My router probably wasn't the best-it wasn't too far away from the router (maybe 50 feet diagonally and one floor up) but my signal strength neve was much better than 60%, and did drop to the 30's.

Next time it happens try playing the "stuck" song on your computer using Winamp or foobar or something like that and see if it sticks in the same spot.  If so, maybe there is a problem with your hard drive-there are plenty of (free) utilities around to check them.

Hi ipy,
Two, maybe three times in the last 13 months, this has happened to me also. Each time it was near the end of the track but not at the very end. And, each time I was able to press the 'next track' button on the remote and continue on. At the time I did not try to replay the paused tracks, but I have on occasions before and since and they are fine. So, it is not a ripping/compression issue.

I am using 6.2.1/FW15, ripping using EAC/FLAC and my modded SB2 is connected wirelessly with an average signal strength of approx 80%. I suspect that it may be caused by a momentary interruption to the router signal or an infrequent glitch at the PC or SB2 but don't really know. As it only happens about twice a year I haven't worried about tracing the cause.

DSK: Thanks for sharing your experience. In terms of the frequency of this happening, like yourself not often but more so in the last couple of weeks since running the SB3 24/7 to break-in my new Bolder PS MKII  :D.

I have also observed that the music/song that gets "stuck" are generally older (not played often) ripped songs which leaves me to conclude that it may be a hardware (HD) issue (I 'm not a computer expert).

BTW, like many others I do have a backup HD for the songs which I have in my main HD so I could sleep better during the night :)

Thump553:  I using the SB3 wireless 2 rooms same level away from the computer/study room.  My wireless router a D-Link D624+ (?) has average signal strength of at least 75%.

No, a hard disk problem would manifest itself in the form of file corruptions and you would not be able to play those tracks at all, they would fail every time. If these songs were ripped/compressed in the same manner as all others, without EAC reporting errors, then I think that it is mere coincidence that the songs failing were older ones.

You could point SlimServer at your backup disk for a couple of weeks of 24/7 to see whether you get lockups on that disk too. I suspect you will.

Good point. I stumbled across a computer forum about 6 months ago and there was a very long thread on D-Link 624 models. A huge number of complaints of lockups and drop outs etc, many people trying various firmware revisions and different combinations of settings but still having problems and many eventually threw the D-Link out, vowing never to buy D-Link again. This seemed out of character for D-Link, perhaps just a bad model.

Thanks all so far for the replies.  Looks like I will be trying out a few things to fix this.
Cheers,

I posted the same question in Slim Devices forum. It suggested for me to download a flac test program which I did.

I used this to test a flac file which got stuck & it returned an error.  At least now I do not have to switch to a later version Slimserver or update my router soon.
