Here is my first DIY project. The Ellis Audio 1801 speakers. You can find (I hope if I did the upload correctly) the pictures in the gallery:

Many thanks to Dave Ellis for his patience and excellent customer service.  And special thanks to Darren Thomas who provided his woodworking expertise to help me put these together. No way could I have done this as well without Darren's help.

I'm pleased with how the Mahogany turned out. I know I can do better next time, using 2-ply veneer and I can do a better job applying the finish a little more evenly. I used Daly's ProFin Gloss which is an oil finish that is highly recommended by woodworkers.... easier to use for beginners.

I will post later on the sound as I'm still trying to iron out problems with my pre-amp, which was my second DIY kit.

Enjoy,

Al Garay

hello al,

i have to say that i'm impressed with how your speakers turned out.

well it seems that you will have some great listening sessions coming up with the aksa.  are you having trouble with the tlp preamp?

i've recently bought the aksa 100 and should have it completed shortly, i was like you and have had plenty of help to complete my project.

anyway happy listening.

regards

Thank you Rod.

I do like my AKSA 100 amps. I ordered the Nirvana upgrade for my TLP (tube-linestage pre-amp). I'm hopeful that will clear up the sound, move the soundstage forward and give it the height and depth that I want. I'm also thinking that I may have a wiring/crossover problem in the speakers since the midrange feels sucked-out, out of balance, especially with the vocals.

I guess this is all part of the journey. And I'm confident that the system will come together sometime.

Enjoy your amp.

Whew... beautiful work. I wish I had the tools, time, talent, patience etc. necessary to turn something like that out. Enjoy them.

Wow, those are really nice! Your first DIY project? :o Wow.

Perhaps the tweeter is not in the correct phase? Anyway I'm sure Dave will help you debug it.

Thanks John. The speakers look great. It's only when you get really close and touch the finish that you notice a bit of the rough spots and uneven shine. But, hey... for my first try, I couldn't be happier. Well, I will be once they are sounding as good as Andy McIntyre's. With Andy's help, we figured out I had made a mistake with the tweeter crossover. Basically, I had almost no tweeter sound. No wonder it sounded bad. I made a quick fix which improved the highs. But, not to the level of Andy's.

I'm going to redo the tweeter crossover and mount it in against the rear-wall. And see if I get the same level of sound as Andy's 1801's. Otherwise, I will be shipping them to Dave Ellis who has offered to fix them. That's what I call A+++ service.

Listening to Andy's 1801's with my AKSA 100 watt amps and his Grounded Grid preamp was strong confirmation of the fantastic sound that this system can produce. I'm looking forward to hearing a modified Foreplay pre-amp to see if it is as good as the Grounded Grid (which had Black Beauty ALPS pot, MIT caps that are supposed to be as good/better than the Audiocap Thetas, and FREDS diodes). I don't know if I'll be able to borrow a GK1. My TLP sounded much better through Andy's 1801s though not as good as the Grounded Grid (the Nirvana package may help). But, I had a terrible clicking/pop problem with the left channel - and only through the TLP.

What a journey this is... Heck, I have not watched one football game. Now, that's different.

You're having a problem with your left channel now? The left channel seemed ok when I listened to it a couple days ago.

Do vocals still sound as distant as they did when I was over? Or was that fixed when you fixed the crossover problem? Are you getting more SPL's with your TLP not that you've fixed the crossover a bit?

When you stop by next I can tell you why I think you're getting the ground loop hum & how to possibly fix it better than we did.

Brian,

I did not get a chance to watch/listen to DVD movies with Andy's 1801s. However, the sound was huge difference from what you heard through my 1801s. The fact that the tweeter was basically not functioning would make a big difference with clarity of dialogue in movies. Also, we were able to crank the volume to very high levels (did not have a dB meter but had to be around 110dB+) and there was no distortion, clipping sound.

I'll be glad to have you over again soon when the tweeter crossover is fixed.

Thanks,

Al
