Speakers for 350 anywhere?
« on: 21 Apr 2007, 11:56 pm »
My cousin has asked me if I could help him get speakers for a HT system. Said his budget is 350 dollars. If anybody knows of any speakers that can be purchased at this price used I'd appreciate it.

I already tried talking him into using two good speakers now and getting a sub and the other speakers later.  I'm not familiar with anything in this price range other than stereo pairs that would be worth buying so any help is appreciated. Thanks

Can he use a circular saw and jigsaw/router? Is he willing to do a little DIY?

Look at the Sherwood HTS-6500

or

Look for a pair of BIC DV-64 plus some of their DV62SIB surrounds

or

Athena LS-100B's with a cheap sub (maybe the AudioSOurce PSW-100)

and last but not least,

MTX system based on the MP42 speaker.

How about the Hsu performance 1 package for $449?  Excellent speaker system for the money. The extra $100 over his budget is well worth it.

Or get the five channels and wait on the sub.  $400 is about the minimum for a good sub.

The HSU system "IS" killer for the money.

I think it also goes without saying that looking for "used" would also be a better option.

An interesting challenge.

8 or 9 years ago I had good success with PSB Alphas and Alpha Minis.  They were the first "budget" speakers produced by Paul S. Barton's Canadian company and had his signature smooth sound.  A new HT setup (without sub) ran about $700, but there's a deal that looks pretty good on ebay right now:

Going even older will get you some good values, but you may have to replace rubber surrounds.  I liked the Boston A40s (and still used a pair in my office), and they're usually fairly easy to find used, and cheap.

Good luck, and have fun.

Thank you everybody for your help. He's been convinced that 500 would be a better idea. I think the HSU sounds like a good possibility as I know their subs aren't bad.
