AKSA's and Behringer DCX2496
« on: 24 Mar 2007, 09:35 am »
I have got the upgrade bug again and the first to go is my old DOD 835 crossover I have used for the past 5 years to crossover the sub.

The replacement is a brand spanker Behringer DCX2496.

Now I have not expected much from this, but I did expect an improvement over the DOD.  Boy was I in for a supprise!

Over the passed few years, the DOD has just been used for the sub only, no HP for the TLb's.  I have tried to use it for HP, but it killed the dynamics, life and made the system sound very ordinary.

2 days ago I have replaced it with the DCX just as I used the DOD, sub only and no electrons going to the TLB's.  After 2 days, I had the sound very good in the low frequencies, the DCX had great flexability, EQ, freq, phase etc.

Overall it is a huge improvement in the low freqencies, more dynamics, range and life in the music.

So, tonite I descided to make some more cables and have used the DCX for HP to the TLB's.  The only adjustments are now the TLB's have a low frequency cut off at 48dB/octave at 80 hz.

The result, unf@#%ing beleivable!!!!!  Almost the same change as the SIEMENS Gold pin tubes in the GK1.

More everything, dynamics, life, control, and distortion that was obviuosly comeing from the low frequencies being produced by the TLb.  Also a by product, the hum from the Cable TV has reduced a large amount as well to very low levels, I don't have to remove the cable when listening to music any more!

The DCX is set up for 2 way with a crossover at 80hz and a CAP is still used for the tweeter.

At AUD$499 an increadable audio bargain!

Hi Mark,

I've had the Behringer Ultradrive Pro DCX2496 (which is its full name) for a number of years and have been using it to roll off the bass section of my Equilibrium speakers at around 250 Hz. I also use it for equalisation and room correction in the bass region and can only vouch for huge improvements as a result of this.

However, I have some reservations on using the DCX2496 as a full range crossover. This is based on some experiments a friend and I made some years ago with using the Behringer in comparison with a passive crossover for the treble and midrange. In these experiments, the passive crossover won every time. Granted the passive crossover used quality components, such as Mundorf Supreme caps and the like, but the Behringer seemed to add some fuzziness to the sound that we didn't like, a sort of veiling of the sound.

However, I can see that you're just using the Behringer to roll off the top system, and that's somewhat different from what we did (we used it as a crossover as such for the whole top system), which obviously  makes a difference. Also, your comparison is another active crossover, whereas ours was a passive crossover with quality components.

All the above being said, the DCX2496 is certainly the ultimate bargain in loudspeaker management. If you have problems with room modes in the bass and have the possibility of driving the bass separately, buy one of these and a separate amp to drive the bass. Then get some in-room measurements done and adjust the DCX2496 to compensate for your room modes, and you'll have bass response and clarity you never dreamed about!  :)
