Django Reinhardt NY Festival - Live at Birdland
« on: 15 Feb 2007, 04:57 am »

I picked up this cd a while back on a whim.  It is now one of my favorites.  The musicians are awesome, as well as the recording quality.  Can any of you recommend something similar to this album that I might try out?  Thanks.

You might try these......

Another similar release...

Then Bireli Lagrene's Gypsy Project.....and......Move...

And......Jimmy Rosenburg...

Listen to the samples to get a taste....their all good recordings... :thumb:

One more...I don't have this....but it looks like a good collection of tunes, and from the samples ok sounding......and its Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli...

Just from the list of people playing on that CD, I will definitely be picking a copy up now as well!  I noticed that Frank Vignola and Joe Ascione were listed on several tracks, so I would highly recommend the following 2 CD's:

The Frank and Joe Show - 33 1/3
The Frank and Joe Show - 66 2/3

I really like Dorado and Samson Schmitt playing the guitars -- closest to Django you will hear.

Hot Club of Detroit
Hot Club Sandwhich
Hot Club de Norvege
Hot club USA
The New Quintette du Hot Club de France

I have at least one of everyone of these groups and enjoy them all.  I also have the Birdland CD that started this thread and most of the other recommendations.

If you can find Phillips, Grier & Flinner "Looking BacK" it's killer.
Thanks for the heads up!

Angelo Debarre et Ludovic Beier: Come into my swing!

Awful English title  :duh:, great cd.

[EDIT] BTW, have you guys noticed that Bireli has a new cd set coming out?

Thanks for the heads up on the new Bireli.  I'm sampling it right now and so far enjoying it.  The big band stuff is different from the other stuff of his that I have, but I'm liking it a lot.

Wow!  Thanks a lot!  Excellent suggestions.  The cd's I could sample sounded exactly like what I'm looking for.  I think I would enjoy any one of them.

Holy crap, I had no idea Grappelli and Grisman had played together.  This one is a must buy for me.  Got to sit up close and personal at a DG Quintet show a couple of years ago... aa.

I'm going to try this again with another album...slightly different genre...and see what happens.  You guys are great.  Thanks again.

I'd never heard of him playing with a big band before, either. Now, he's done almost everything in jazz (suppose he hasn't really done anything "avante garde"). I never realized he was a virtuouso bass player until a couple days ago (supposedly, he learned bass from Jaco Pastorius :o). Pretty amazing guy altogether.

That Grapelli and Grisman album is fantastic!  I also saw Grapelli a few years before he died...one of my favorite concerts.

Here's another great Reinhardt-influenced guitar player:
