bryston sp2 upgrade
« on: 15 Feb 2007, 01:20 am »
hello all you audiophiles out there,

i posted a question regarding the sp1.7. upgrade to the sp2 a while ago around December '06 i got three responds that i should upgrade to the sp2 i was hesitant because i wanted all the features that come with the sp2 not just a hand full so i took a giant leap and sold my sp1.7 and purchased the sp2 c-series in black.

now can anyone of you guys tell me what your hearing I'm a 2-channel fanatic I'm using the analog 2 ch. bypass and boy I'm hearing things.

the sp2 in my opinion is more open with cleaner highs and mids the imaging is just awesome the sp1.7 did not image as well and it seems to me the 1.7 had much more bass.
the sp2 has bass but it's more refined and more realistic sound.
i read on this forum that quiet a few guys are using it to listen to music in the digital domain and they like the way it sounds in multichannel.

i don't listen to music in surround sound i started to a few years back but I'm one of those guys that i don't find hearing trumpets behind me realistic so i stuck with 2 channel.
know don't get me wrong i do like sacd in 2 channel the recordings are superb especially the sacd's like "Diana krall" her voice and her band sound so real i sometime forget that I'm listening to a plastic disc that's how real the sp2 makes my system sound.

is there anyone out there that agrees with me?

just to give everyone a heads up on my system this is what it consist of.
know mind you i don't have really expensive high end speakers or CD player and I'm hearing things that i didn't hear before.

bryston sp2 pre/pro
bryston 4bsst 2-channel amp for my left and right front speakers
bryston 9bsst 4 channel amp for ht system
Sony sacd/cd 555es cd player with nordost spm interconnect analog only
denon-2910 DVD player
scientific Atlanta 3250 hd-set top box
monster power htps-7000 line conditioner
monster power avs-2000 voltage stabilizer
Polk audio lsi9's left and right front speakers
Polk audio lsic front center channel
Polk audio fx300i's left and right surround speakers
Polk audio cs245i back center channel

my cables are nordost blue heaven interconnects and speaker cables bi-wire
power cords are nordost Shiva on the pre/pro and cardas golden power cords on the amps.
the rest of my system has cardas cross power cords except the Sony 555es it has the regular cord that comes connected with the player which I'm not happy with this at all.

Hi Chip1

I currently have an SP1.7 and was considering on upgrading it to SP2.  Now you got me thinking.  What made you decide on selling the SP1.7 and buying the SP2 rather than just upgrading the SP1.7?

hello tony1

i have a friend that purchased the sp2 and we started comparing units, i also really liked the c-series cosmetics which has a much thicker face plate and the display is much nicer.

but what really lead me to purchase the sp2 was the sound that was coming out of the unit tony i was thinking of upgrading from the 1.7 to the sp2 but i got a really good deal on a sp2 that i could not pass up. like i mention in my post the unit is awesome the sound is just much cleaner and instruments just come out at me i wasn't' getting that from the 1.7 also the 1.7 to me is a warmer pre/pro from the sp2 which warm is good but when i heard the sp2 in my friends house it was just much better.
remember the 1.7 has the Motorola 56367 dsp chip the sp2 has the new ti aureus chip also it has the bp26 analog pre/pro in it which makes the 2-channel bypass sound great.

so that's what made me upgrade to the sp2, know listen i think you will benefit a great deal on upgrading your 1.7 to the sp2 . i didn't do it because I'm meticulous.

good luck on what ever decision you make, also if you upgrade let me know what your hearing and tell me if you here a difference.
