Onix SP3 and Subwoofer
« on: 2 Jan 2007, 03:18 am »
I have a question about wiring a sub from an Onix SP3 as I am looking at purchasing this amp for my system.

I understand the amp does not have any sub or pre outs but am wondering if it causes any problems or negatively effects sonic performance to wire the sub in parallel to the main speakers.
My low end mirage sub has line level speaker inputs as well as pre amp input.
Will this reduce impedance to dangerous levels if using a set of mains that are 8ohms? 4Ohms?
Thanks

Run speaker cables from the SP3 to your main speakers and then another piece of speaker cable from those same binding posts on your speakers to the speaker level input (high level) on the sub...

Hope that helps!

Is running the wires from the speaker binding posts to the sub any different than running them from the amp amp binding posts to the sub?

Not really - I just don't want you running the speaker cables to the sub and then from the sub to the speakers... :)

Actually, it depends if the high level outputs on your sub are high-pass filtered.  If so, then that makes a difference.  I don't know how many subs do high-pass filtering on the speaker level outputs.

I believe that most subs do high pass on the high level outs but the quality is only so-so as it is costly to do it well... even our own subs that have high level outs have marginal-quality high pass filters on their high level outs so I just stay away from those all together :)
