Questions for proper setup of MG's Room Tunes Pak
« on: 31 Jan 2007, 03:25 pm »
Hi.  I just got a used set of Michael Green's Room Tunes.  The kit did not come with any instructions or manual for setup (that's what I get for being cheap).   If anyone can offer any guidance or has a manual for these products, any help or suggestions you have are appreciated because I had a few questions.   I understand the principle that the reflective side of the pillows face out into the room and the absorbtive side to the wall.  Starting with the triangle pillows, should they be pulled tight or flush against the wall or should they sag down?  My logic tells me they should sag so the waves can get behind the pillow and be trapped in the absorbtive side, but I recall reading somewhere that the pillow reflects some frequencies but other frequencies will pass through and then get trapped so they should be flush against the wall and not sag.  Also,  I read an old review of the MG Room Tunes where the reviewer placed the triangle pillows with the reflective side facing out into the room behind the speakers, but placed the triangle pillows with the absorbtive side facing out for the ones behind the listener.  Is this the recommended setup for the MG product or is this just something this particular reviewer tried on his own volition?  Lastly, has anyone found the corner rectangles to be effective when closer to the floor as opposed to in the middle of the wall/corner or closer to the ceiling?  Because of some built-in cabinets I have, the only way the rectangles will fit is either directly beneath the corner triangle pillow (as in the rectangle will touch the triangle) or very close to the floor.

I hope these questions make sense.  Its so hard to discuss these things in just a written format.  I'm just wondering what guidance or recommendations may be available before I start putting a million push pin holes in my walls.  Good thing I have nice family that understands and deals with my crazy hobby.  Thanks folks.

I have the Deluxe set-up, its 4 corner pillows, 4 seam rectangles and 2 anti-echo pillows.

The corner triangles need to be snug against the corners, no sags or spaces between the walls/corners & traingle.

The seam Rectangles are quite picky about placement...they MUST be 12" off the ground at the lowest point.    Mine are 48" tall so they go to about 5' up the wall seam.

Initially i set the triangles correctly and haphazardly put up the long rectangles.  After a week or so of being pretty impressed i went back and adjusted the bottom of the pillow to be exactly 12" off the ground and it made a gigantic difference, like a lense snapping into focus.

According to the instructions, the reflective side must be facing the room with all the pillows.

My room is not perfect for this kit, its an L shaped room & one of the seam rectangles can't be mounted properly.   But for my 1st foray into room acoustics its been $ really well spent.

at some point i'll move up to Eighth Nerve products, not for a while though.

The MGA system is based on pressurizing the room and taming corner horn effects (or something like that) so keeping the pillows snug against corners & seams is crucial.
