Hey MichaelV,
I've tried 3 of the ElectroClears. These and the Quietlines, to the best of my recollection are just "parallel filtration". They use capacitors in parallel to reduce noise on the electrical line.
In my experience, 3-of these did not do much for me.
When I plugged them into the same line that my gear is plugged into I noticed a dramatic loss of dynamics, punch, gestalt, etc.... Not good. After some more reading I found that they are best used around the house on the same line as noisy appliances (fridge, fluorescent lights, dimmer switches, etc...). Scattered about the house, for me it seems that it would take at least 6, maybe more, to have a significant benefit. Now, keep in mind that I use a tweaked Monster power conditioner which already quiets the line noise pretty well...so it may work for others...?
Presently, I am using 2 of the ElectroClears on my power distr. for my PC ...
personal computer....(that I use EAC on)....along with a Z-Sleeve (AWESOME product for use w/audio gear!!!...on power cords, ICs, etc...) and a DIY RGPC....I've used EAC (Exact Audio Copy) to "remaster" (rip and burn) most of my CD collection with some nice improvements in sound quality. The QLs may (?) be helping here, but I can't be certain. See the links in this AA post to learn about EAC and such... http://www.audioasylum.com/audio/digital/messages/126347.html
If you are confident w/DIY AC stuff, there are some recipes for making these parallel filters on the audioasylum Tweaks/DIY section. You gotta do a search over there.... I may try doing this, since its
so cheap in relative terms to the commercial units.
Jon Risch (
http://www.geocities.com/jonrisch/index2.htm) has some great DIY designs for all sorts of stuff (bass traps, room lenses, etc....) including directions for creating a very good in-line power filter, but some of the parts are tough to acquire.....DIYcable.com has a filter already pre-assembled, that uses nearly the same directions/specs as Jon's design.
