« on: 15 May 2007, 03:11 am »
I would like to get a few SACDs with true "audiophile" sound.
Type of music that I like:
Acoustic Guitar
Saxophone Jazz
Vocals
Any ideas?

Allison Krause + Union Station, Live At The Lousiville Palace, Louisville KY; hybrid, Rounder SACD.  More live sounding than anything I know of for this type music; musicians among the best roots/bluegrass.  On my modified Sony DVP-NS900V the Red Book beats the SACD; YMMV.  (Let us know which layer you prefer, listen carefully.)

On a related note you may find interesting a thread to be started shortly in the hi-rez (or other) circle: Sound quality compared, SACD vs. the best Red Book.

Monk's Music - Thelonious Monk  on redbook as well as SACD
West of 5th - Hank Jones, Christian McBride, Jimmy Cobb    a CHESKY recording

I would say stay away from all SONY recordings.  Telarc tends to do a good job and I have a couple of their classical SACD's.

I have more, but these are just off the top of my head.  Also, don't forget XRCD.  If I have time I will post a list.
musicdirect.com stamps "TAS" on recordings that have been picked by The Absolute Sound.

SACD I would recommend for starters - but you have to like the music too.

Jazz, Pop, etc. - I listen in 2 Ch SACD to these
Flim & the BB's - Tricycle
Diana Krall - Love Scenes
Mark Knopfler - Shangri-la
Art Pepper - Art Pepper + Eleven
Chet Baker - Chet
Steve Davis - Quality of Silence
Blue Coast Collection - Various Artists

Classical - I listen in MCH SACD to these
Britten/Elgar - Paavo Jarvi (Conductor)
RCA Living Stereo - Sherherazade
RCA Living Stereo - Pictures at an Exhibition - Also the MoFi version
Mozart Violin Concertos 3 & 4 - Julia Fisher (Pentatone Label)
Mozart Youth Symphonies (1,2,3,4 - Pentatone Label) 2 & 3 sound the best
Boston Symphony Chamber Players - Mozart Chamber Music for Winds and Strings

Almost any on the Telarc Label
I also like the Pentatone Classical SACD's

Some vocals:

Freddy Cole, "Merry Go Round."

Jacintha, specifically, "Jacintha is Her Name" and "Here's to Ben," more so than "Lush Life."  I haven't heard "Autumn Leaves," but it's on my list.

Patricia Barber, "Night Club" and "Modern Cool."

Hey dude; some suggestions (I think samplers are great starts; lots of good ones out on sacd:
Stockfisch Records "Closer to the music"
Opus 3 "30th Anniversary Celebration Album"
Concord Records "Concord Jazz Super Audio CD Sampler"
...and of course The Dave Brubeck Quartet "Time Out"

If you want more and like these selections, let me know ....
Enjoy!

Greetings:

I am not new to audio, but I am brand spanking new to SACD.  Many of you may be laughing for several reasons (e.g. you missed the boat!  or,  SACD is dead!  or,  where have you been for the last 5 years?) and I'm laughing right along with you.

My question has to do with labels rather than specific titles.

For classical music,  so far I have gathered:   Sony bad, Telarc good.  As the label Reference Recordings is to outstanding HDCD recordings,    are there labels (other than Telarc) for classical  which do a really good job with the SACD format?

Thanks in advance,
GR

I have a few SACDs, the two that I like the most are (both female vocal):

Diana Krall: When I Look In Your Eyes: Verve

Rebecca Pidgeon: Restrospective (SACD Hybrid): Chesky

Happy SACD listening.
