This thread is an eye opener for me. Like I said, I have just been thinking about this in the last few weeks about, why not take the mechanical DVD/CD player out of the equation. Just something digital to a good tube DAC and away I go!
Thanks to all including JoshK, Daygloworange and special thanks to John Casler for breaking down my questions along with answering them. I will be calling you soon John! :thumb:

George,

I picked up a used Ah! Njoe Tjoeb 4000 with all the options, but haven't been able to use it as:

1.)  I don't have a pre-amp (SB didn't need one)
2.)  The 4000's volume control only goes down to about half volume, which is way too loud
3.)  Diverted funds to complete the family HT system
4.)  With wife's out of state surgery and winter propane heating bills here in Michigan I'm waiting for tax returns to buy a pre-amp

So I've been using an old Sony ES CDP that has a full range (but one of those that cuts off all the  dynamic peaks) volume control.   :(
