how do you handle your classical music tags?
« on: 2 Jan 2007, 07:55 pm »
I think I have a basic, simple way of handling the rest of my music tags, but I'm kind of stumped about what to do with all of my classical music.  :scratch:

I'm considering using 5 genres (renaissance, baroque, classical, romantic, modern) but am totally unsure of how to handle the composer and artist, as well as common situations like multiple composers on one album.

Anyone have some cool tips about how to make my classical collection understandable via Squeezebox?

Thanks!

:-) Dayne

When in doubt, go alphabetical.  :lol: :lol:  Along with your five categories, I also differenciate opera, bach, mozart and beethoven.  These three composers, to me, are categorically singular! 8)

Instead of dividing my classical genres by period (baroque, classical, etc.), I do it by the type of composition: Orchestral, Chamber, Choral, Instrumental.

I have a harder time with artist/album/track. Here is what I've come up with:

Artist = composer: "Beethoven"
Album = work + performance: "String Quartet 15 in A minor, op 132 (Quartetto Italiano)"
Track = number + movement: "1. Assai sostenuto - Allegro"

Not perfect, but it works for me.

Hi guys,

Thanks for the inputs! How does that system work with the album when there are, say, 4 different symphonies on the same disk? And with 4 symphonies from different composers?

Cheers,

I pretty much forget about the original disk. A CD with 4 symphonies turns into four differnt "albums". After all, they are different works and are meant to stand alone.

Composer = Composer (e.g. "Beethoven")
Album = the work name (e.g. "Concerto, Piano No. 5")
Artist = performers (e.g. "Fleisher_Szell_Cleveland Orchestra")
Track Name = movement name (e.g. "1 - Allegro")
Genre = (e.g. Classical or Jazz or Pop (Songs) ...)
Sub Genre = (e.g. Orchestral, Concerto, Sonata, Chamber ...)
Version = identifies different performances (or remasterings)
    with same Composer, Album, Artist
Conductor =  the conductor (e.g. "Szell")

I use J. River Media Center 11 with Flac files so I can define the tags and database fields I need and tag my files as I rip them.  Then I can sort and select with whatever sequence of tags I choose.

I think that Foobar can use the Composer tag and others.

Look around for s/w that does what you need rather than just living with an unsatisfactory system dictated by s/w developers who didn't bother to think about the needs of classical music.
