entry into tube amps

Can anybody help me out with tube amps?  I'm looking for a good entry level tube amp, but have no clue what to look for (class A, push/pull, etc...)  I know Dodd Audio makes some good stuff, but I was looking for something less expensive.  Also, I would probably need a preamp.  I plan on using the amp to power the OB 7's less subwoofer, so any wattage recommendations would be appreciated as well.

Bill Baker of Response Audio has a killer deal on a Manley Shrimp preamp and Mahi monoblocks.  They would be a really sweet combo.  See the Industry Ads Circle.  Good Luck.  Tom

Hey Warren:

I have spoken about this amp a few times on this forum.

Works wonderfully with the OB 5's for most of my music. Can run out of steam if drivin fairly hard so I may end up bi-amping, or just going for the McAlsiter Push/Pull 150. It offers 75 watts per channel and should be plenty.

GR speakers offer tremendous value, so do the McAlister amps.

The ideal starting amp for under $2000 is the Rogue Audio Cronus.  Yes, it is an integrated amp, but it has active preamp stage, not passive like most of the rest.  If Ihad $1900 to spend on an amp alone, I would get Quicksilver Audio's Mid Monoblocks, but then i would need a preamp, so I would get a Mapletree Audio SA-2 linestage preamp.  Next up would be a Manley Stingray integrated for $2400 and then after that I'd look at the Manley Mahi Monoblocks possibly with their Shrimp Preamp.  OF these, only Quicksilver is a small outfit, but it has been in business for 20+ years.  All hand wired, point to point. 2-3 week turn around.  Never misses a commitment,or so I am told.  Otherwise I would stay away from small boutiques the first time around.

I recently purchased an amp that is identical to the H88 and have been very happy with it.  It is my first venture into tubes.  http://www.melodyhifi.com/index.html You have to call for prices but they are very resonable.

The Rogue also has a nice phono stage and is remote controlled, 2 things you don't always find in a tube integrated these days.
