Some Quick A/V-3S Questions:
« on: 15 Jan 2008, 08:14 pm »
Is there an available cabinet design that is ported for more base extension?

If there's a ported version available, how deep would the speaker go (55 Hz like the A/V-2's)?

Is there any problems standing the A/V-3S upright as a monitor speaker?

If you can stand the A/V-3S upright as a monitor, how tall should be the stands? (my ears are either 42 in. or 44 in. off ground - I can't remember which)

Thanks Bunches :)

A normal A/V-3?  They aren't ported, but a transmission line so that may not be what you are hunting.

Danny specs them for 40hz at -3dB (TL is more efficent for bass than ported).

And they sound great!   :guitar: :drums:

My HT room uses them as mains.  When I was smoke testing them in the den system my wife specifically told me to build another pair because they were so much better than what I had been running in that system.

Unfortunately they had been displaced to the game room for a few months because of cosmetics/space.  I'd bought a pair of Horns to experiement with single driver and SET and they got seized for the den since they fit under the plasma.  After a redesign of the den the A/V-3s are back and staying put.  I still like the Horns and they work great in the gameroom where I can put them in the corners like they belong, but the A/V-3s are much more to our tastes for the common area.

He means the Center Channel A/V-3S:  http://gr-research.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=117

I can also highly recommend the A/V-3 towers.  I built the first version for a customer here and I built the second version for myself.  They are great.  drcruz:  if you are considering a pair of A/V-3S as main speakers, I suggest that if you have room, build the A/V-3 towers.  The kit price is $329/pair and the A/V-3S is $159 each, so the cost is about the same for a pair.

Yup Hank you are correct. The reason for concidering the A/V-3S as mains is because of room limitations and the need for them to be portable, plus I like the impedance spec's. It would be for a home theater system and since I like to run all my channels in large I would like a little LF extension for the center. I'm not too worried about the mains because I would use my subs to fill in the FL/FR LF.

Thanks... :)

Those guys gave you some really good advice.

You can double the air space of the A/V-3S (not really an S (sealed) model anymore) and port it to get a -3db in the 45Hz range.

However, the standard A/V-3, with its transmission line design, takes better control of those woofers, gives you a lower -3db, maintains a easy to drive impedance load, and takes up no more floor space than an A/V-3S on a stand. Another plus is you don't have to build or spend money on a stand.  :thumb:

If you need to place it near the rear wall then you can even flip flop the transmission line and let it exit out the front.

Actually Danny, the quote above is exactly what I was looking for. Thanks for the info.

Two ONE follow-up questions: May be I should read the entire A/V-3S page before asking the question  :duh:

Is there any problems standing the A/V-3S (or not S  ) upright as a monitor speaker?

If you can stand the A/V-3S upright as a monitor, how tall should be the stands? (my ears are either 42 in. or 44 in. off ground - I can't remember which)

Like I said I need the speakers portable. Thanks again  :)

There is no problem with flipping it around (vertical) and using it as mains.

You can use the A/V-3 plans as a guide on the height.

Getting the tweeter to ear level is going to be ideal.

room limitations and the need for them to be portable
Ah, sorry then I didn't know that size was going to matter.

I realized you were talking about the A/V-3S and was making the point that if you just didn't want a sealed A/V-3S then the normal A/V-3 was the ticket.

Basically I misread ported as just not sealed, but you really did mean ported vs the tl since it would allow for more cabinet variations.

Regardless of how you build it, they are good speakers so enjoy!

What would be the best choice for bookshelf speakers, the AV-3S or AV-1?  I'm thinking of building a pair for my son, but size and portability would be crucial for him.

If the speaker will be right up against a rear wall on the book shelf of walled in on the sides then a sealed box design like the A/V-3S will be a better choice.
