Questions about adding a woofer
« on: 25 Mar 2009, 09:20 pm »
First post!

This is what I have: Cayin ta-30(bizzbee upgrades) running a pair of Hawthorne SI's 15in in a standard 30x20  baffles made with birch with upgraded Sonicaps in the crossover. My room is 12ft wide and 20 ft deep. I listen to all kinds of music but nothing really loud( town home) I am not interested in having lots of bass just a little more to fill in the sound.

This is my idea: I was thinking of adding 1 eminence alpha 15 to each side with a plate amp to run both alphas. The baffles would be around 40in high & 18 wide. The eminence would sit about 3 1/2 in of the ground. Not sure about where to crossover( i'm not very technical )

Would this combination work well? if not any other woofer recommendations.
I'm looking for a simple solution and open to ideas

I know augies would be great but they are out of my price range right now. Money is tight.
I love the SI 15's, wonderful product.
Thanks.

Hey dwell,
So you want simple, cheap and easy....??? Yea, been there, doin' that.  aa

Since money is a little tight, you can use one plate amp to run both Alpha's. The cheap one's on PartsExpress are about $100, and would MORE than suffice for medium listening levels. (Sidenote; I know a fella that had racked up quite a few complaints from his fellow apartment dwellers using one 15" Augie and a 25watt Radio Shack amp.) So a single plate amp would more than suffice. The baffle size of 18 X 40 sounds pretty good. As far as where to crossover (XO), the plate amps have a convenient little knob that allows you to change your XO from 40Hz to ?? Somewhere close to 180Hz I can't recall, but probably higher than you'll ever need to go. Somewhere in the middle should be fine. You ears will tell you what's best.

Agreed about your comment regarding the SIs.  aa

Hope that helps young grasshopper.
