Behringer DEQ Mods
« on: 12 Nov 2006, 09:44 pm »
My current setup is:

Squeezebox (dig out) -----> Behringer (analog out) -----> Nuforce amps

I was thinking of buying an external DAC, but then saw that RAM mods the Behringer DEQ.  Has anyone had their Behringer modded by RAM?  Thoughts?  Comparisons?

ecruz, I have been looking at the DEQX and have been thinking about trying the Behringer first.  Where can I read about the ram mods you are talking about?  Thanks, Guy

I too sent him an email.  I asked his opinion on a modded Lite Dac or the Behringer mod.  I was just hoping to hear from someone who had a modded DEQ.

That would be nice.  Did you get a response to your email, and what did he say?

I had one unit modded and the results were terrific.  Great customer service too.

Prior to modding the unit sounded "tizzy": a bit like the sound of an overly compressed MP3 file.  Post modding it is very transparent, and, has more "slam" and "drive" and "aliveness" to it.

I found some modding info on audioasylum under a different thread re: benchmark dac 1.  The guy was claiming his modded deq smoked a dac1, and posted the following:

Be warned the pcb is very fragile.......
replace all electrolytic caps of 10uf with 10uf 35v elna stargets.

swap the four large psu caps with pannasonic fc caps with a slightly higher capacitance don't add more than 50%.

replace the rectifier diodes with 11DQ10's or better.

find the two 10uf caps that are dc blockers after the dac and opamp in the output before the pair of opamps doing balanced duties.

swap these for you fav dc blocker cap ....this cap plays a big roll in he final sound. I used big paper in oils 2uf 400v.

damp the case and crystals

be warned its very difficult to remove components without lifting tiny tracks ...I had to do several bits of rewiring.

sound changes ...the first and most obvious is that you get bass !

but along with that you get better dynamics and a clearer sound.

Just wanted to mention, Endler Audio also does mods to the Behringer DEQ/DCX units, I have been looking at these myself...

Endler's reference to the ADAC/sample rate converter for $130 is pretty interesting (SRC2496):

cheap enough to experiment with and a handy studio tool.

I still haven't heard from anyone at RAM.  The consesus over at Audiogon seems to be to get an external DAC and leave the DEQ as it is.

If you had it modded and say go analog in and out then what happened? Wouldn't just using the digital in and out be better? I'm not sure I understand what you're saying.

Imo however there's no mods that are going to make the digital in and out any better. If you want a better dac then buy an aftermarket dac. I doubt putting much money into one of these will make it worth much more on the used market although I plan to run mine til the tires fall off.

Meant to say that I go analog in and analog out ... not that you should

I can't get a digital chain in my chain
