SE-9 OWNERS, a little help please.
« on: 10 Jul 2003, 10:51 pm »
I am  considering purchasing an SE-9  to power some Axiom m-22's.
However I have read some feedback that it can be a bit shy in the bass.
I know this depends on the speaker that it is driving, but maybe some of you are familiar with Axioms(about 92 db).

I am currently using these speakers with some wave 8's feed directly from a cdp(w/volume control) and the bass and mids are quite good, however the highs can get a little grainy.

I just wanted to try some tubes and I really like the sound.

any other ideas for an int tube amp under $750?

thanks
Dan

If you already have the Wave 8's, you might try upgrading to Svetlana 6BM8 tubes, which provide a marked increase in the full range of sound.  It gets much sweeter in the mids and highs, and the bass also tightens up a little bit.  Also, upgrading the coupling caps to Auricaps provides a significant improvement in resolution and detail, and especially in the highs.  On the whole, those upgrades cost $40 for the tubes, and about $30 for the capacitors, and bring the Wave 8 to a much higher level of performance.

I am very happy with my SE-9 at all frequencies.  The only consideration I would have is how loud do you want to play?  If it is loud enough for you and the selected speakers, then I think you would have a very hard time beating it.  I think it sounded really excellent on Sotantar's Zu Druids.

I listen at low to moderate levels in a 12x16 bedroom, so volume should not be a problem. I was concerned if a SE tube  amp would have as much bass
as a push pull.

The wave 8's are a great deal, sometimes  just a little rough up top.
I'm sold on the sound of tubes and they tame the m22's up top which can be somewhat bright on mid-fi SS.

Any recommendations for a int tube amp around $700-jolida 102b?

Thanks for the input.

I'll second Harley Mike's comments.  That se-9 sounded great on my Druids.  I still haven't gotton over it.  The bass was just fine.  Peace
