stratos/khartago input impedence
« on: 14 Nov 2006, 02:42 pm »
Hi guys,
There is a general thought that the minimum difference between the input impedance of the power map and output impedance of the preamp needs to be 1 : 10. The more the better. I have a preamp with an output impedance of around 1.5k ohm and the designer has cautioned me against using any power amp with less than 20 ohm input impedance. Isn’t the 11k ohm input impedence of the stratos / khartagos a bit too less for for most tube preamps. Most have output impedence above 1.5 k ohms.

Herz I faced the same problem with my stratos DM.

I make a seach on this forum and got the info : the input impedance depending on people is 10 or 18kohms which is low.

A bad inpedanc ematch between pre and amp can lead to distorsion specially if you use long interconnects (this issue is less likely with usual interconnects lengths like 3 feet) but won't endanger either your amp or preamp.

For your information, my Stratos worked perfectly with my Minimax preamp without any trouble in spite of its (Mininmax) output inpedance of 1,5 Kohms.

I've changed for a 600 ohms EAR preamp and it goes well too.

The input on the odyssey amps should be 10,000 ohms / 10 kohm I believe.. I have a pre with 1.0 to 1.2 k out... seems to be okay... any higher does seem it would start to get out of range, but from my understanding the new Candela is as high as 2.0 k so obviously this works.

i have been running tube preamplifiers with my Odyssey power amplifiers for quite some time ,in fact i have owned and used three different tube preamplifiers in my two channel rig including an Anthem Pre 1L and a Balanced Audio Technology VK3i and finally a Odyssey Candela and there was no problem whatsoever. the Odyssey poweramplifiers are very tube friendly  thanks....WCW III
