RE: Update on publication of paper
« on: 30 Jun 2003, 06:20 am »
Hello everyone -

Few things I'd like to address in this post.  First off, I'm no longer only an audiophile - I've changed my status to be a manufacturer representative for quite a few of the brands that I know and respect.  That being said, for those of you who need to alter your opinion of my posts, feel free ;).

I've been involved with audiophila and the community for over five years now, and have no hesitancy in saying it's been one of the great positive influences on my life.  This past May, I finished my undergraduate enginerring education at Penn, and have since decided to dedicate my career (and largely life) to the reproduction of music.

I've posted in this forum (Digital Domain) because I've disclosed that I've been working on a thesis for nearly the past year discussing the implementation of digital to analog conversion, and why the compact disc hasn't yet reached it's sonic potential though it's been around 20 years.  The good news is that academics seem to appreciate what I have to say; I've been given the opportunity to elaborate on some principles and ideas to resubmit in the form of  a proposal for a Master's thesis in a discipline of engineering.  The bad news; I can't publish any portion of the thesis until it is complete, for the sake of academic integrity.

Regardless, I'm doing what I do because I love it.  I want to thank all of you that emailed me over the years, and have given me support.  I'm taking the plunge into supporting our diminishing industry - these times are scary, but exhilerating.  I promise, one day, I'll make available my written studies publicly ;)

Kind Regards

Rup

Ahm... so, the purpose of this post is to tell everybody that you haven't published your thesis?

John,

That's pretty much it.  I received a decent number of follow-up emails regarding availablility, as I had originally stated on A.C. and on A.A. the available date would be around the end of June.  If you think it's appropriate to move/delete this post, feel free.

Why does going for a Master's prevent you from publishing your undergraduate thesis? I mean, don't you have to finish the first one before they can give you the degree?

I don't get it  :|

John,

I have no idea how Rup's thesis works, whether it is a continuation of his undergrad thesis or not.  However, I just wanted to say that my university required undergrad thesises (SP?  Thesi?) for graduation from all degrees.  That being said, many like myself, chose topics well above the undergraduate level, and were not able to fully complete all points of the research.  However to encourage such ambition even beyond what is attainable the thesis requirements were met at the undergraduate level for having completed significant progress or partial completeness of the research attempted.   Maybe his undergrad thesis was the basis for this research?

John,

Josh is right on.  Yes, the thesis has to be finished for a degree.  However, completing a thesis and handing it in to the department board versus making the information publicly available are two separate things.  The work was completed to the level that was satisfactory for a B.S.E. , but not for a M.S.E (the work is a continuation of my undergraduate thesis).  In order for my paper to be satisfactory to a higher level, there needs to be a lot more in-depth exploration of ideas and themes that did not need to be justified previously.  Until the paper is again finished and then reviewed, I can't make it available.  Once it is rejected or accepted, either way I'll be able to upload the .pdf for people to read.
