modding Clari-t ---> Sig 30 ?
« on: 18 Oct 2006, 11:04 am »
Hi.

I'm a happy owner of a dual mono Clari-t. I am however looking for a bit of extra warmth and was origianally thinking of a tube preamp.

I'm now thinking I would like to try the Jensen PIO caps to see what this would sound like. I'm happy to live on less power and without an enclosure just to get a feel for what the signature 30 might sound like, and will then look to save towards a signature 30 should funds allow.

My question is, what are the exact caps that are used in the signature 30?

I'm very new to diy and any further advice on how to go about this mod would be greatly appreciated.

many thanks.

Hi dewar,

Welcome to the RWA forum and audiocircle.

The Jensen PIO caps are pretty large and in the case of your dual-mono Clari-T with built-in volume control.... they will be extremely difficult to fit (most likely not possible at all).  A larger enclosure would be needed.

The Clari-T is a different animal than the Sig 30.  I need to be upfront here... Even the most highly modded Clari-T (even with the PIO caps installed) does not have the Sig 30 sound.  They are different designs (different chips, different boards, different parts) that sound different.

I don't recommend you DIY mod your Clari-T... there is a lot of delicate soldering to the board (which uses many surface mount parts).  It is very easy it make a mistake, and this would void your warranty and could be expensive to repair (parts, labor, shipping, etc.).

For extra warmth, I think trying a tube preamp or a warmer sounding source is the better way to go.   :thumb:

Best regards,

Vinnie

I love jensen PIO copper caps I bought for my 2wpc korneff.  Good grief, its been many months of casual listening and they just keep opening up.

Couldnt he have the caps stick out the top of the enclosure vinny?

Hi Sean,

If he wants to drill the enclosure and make it looks like a frankenstien creation, this could be done  :icon_lol:

Of course if somehow the caps get pushed around, they will yank out wiring attached to them and it could get ugly  :?

The leads of the PIO caps are silver and not insulted, so they MUST be insulated if they are going to stick out the top.

Thanks for the replies both of you.

I didnt know that the Clari-T and Sig 30 had different chips and other bits. Guess I wont know what the 30 sounds like without buying.

I might however want to try the PIO caps with the amp I have> I will keep it for a second system rather than sell it so I dont mind the cpas sticking out of holes in the top of the enclosure.

Could someone give me the product number/specs of the Jensen caps you guys are using?

Many thanks.

Hi dewar,

Yes, they use different chips and run on different voltages.  The Clari-T runs on one 12V SLA, while the Sig 30 runs on 24V (two 12V SLA's in series) and 5V (via a voltage regulator).

As for caps, use Jensen 2.2uF/100V Copper-foil PIOs.

Good luck,

Vinnie
