Problems w/Clarinet Line Stage
« on: 6 Jan 2007, 03:49 am »
I've had a Clarinet for about 7 months.  It's a great little preamp.  Recently it started to sound very tinny and there were several cracks and pops on both channels.  I decided to re tube with JJ gold pins, ECC82's,  and a Jan 5Y3 GT rectifier.   The unit sounds great again but there are a few new issues.  First, the warm-up time, from red LED to green LED, is now 10 seconds versus a former 30 seconds plus.  After the green LED is on a loud hum starts and fades out within 5 seconds.  Once the hum fades everything operates normally.  Any ideas as to what might be wrong?    Thank you.

I suspect your main problem was probably a failing U7 tube.  And now you've got a new 5Y3 installed, too.  What you experience is normal.  The reason is that the Sovtek 5Y3 is not directly heated, as the NOS are.  This makes a big difference in warmup time - or the delay before B+ arrives and the LED turns green.

Short warmup is ok with these preamp tubes under these low current conditions (do not try the same thing with power tubes, as they can experience cathode stripping over time).  That's why I could get away with specifying the 5Y3 rectifier.  I can also use a higher than data sheet input capacitor because the real story is about peak currents and energy ratings.  Both of which I stay far within limits.  Not to mention thos extra 220 ohm anode resistors you don't see on other equipment.

Anyway, all voltages and hum will stabilize at about 30 to 60 seconds.  After this first minute, the unit should be dead quiet.  If it is making noise, we'll have a problem to talk about.  If you don't like the start-up hum, then try switching to a GZ34 or something.  Many octal rectifiers will work in this plug.  It's a good way to try and see what you prefer for sonics.

Hello!  I am wrapping up construction on a Clarinet.  Can anyone help a novice understand the circuit a little more?  I think I understand that there are 2 components.  The power supply and the signal path.  It looks like the high voltage from the transformer goes to the rectifier and this goes to the B+.  What does the rectifier do?  What does B+ refer to?  Is bias referring to having the right voltage going to the tube for the correct gain of the signal?  Any dumbed down help in understanding what is going on would be greatly enlightening!  I can't wait to get this thing fired up.  Peace.  Robert

Robert,

Here's a link to some definitions and overview information as a start.

Jim,

       Thank you for the clarifications.
