Your choice of software format?
« on: 13 Oct 2006, 06:30 pm »
I know that this topic must have been covered previously, but since I am still a relative
Circle newbiephile I rould like to get some opinions:
Given the choice of any digital source software which wouold you choose strictly for
best sound quality?
In otherwords:
SACD
DVD Audio
XRCD
Computer driven
etc, etc.
I am trying to build up my CD software but I don't want waste money on the schlock that is normally
available.  I don't have much experience with anything other then the standard Redbook.

A computer based system is in my opinion the best sound for the dollar. I'm currently using a Mac Mini and the software that came with it called iTunes. Very easy to use.

Your question is relevant if you're lucky enough to be able to convince yourself to like music based upon its alleged Hi-Fi merits.  All those formats do sound good, but will you actually like the bands that are available?  I've purchased stuff with a format-driven intent and although there are some winners, a lot of them are mediocre.  Unfortunately it's difficult to disabuse one's self of the sound-focused fetish once you start!  Heh!  I'd recommend getting a sampler from AIX Records for a taste of DVD-A.

(Wanna buy a Doug McLeod "Come To Find" blues XRCD by chance?)

DVD-A is the best sounding of the ones I've heard.  Although you'd be pretty bored if you had to get by with only the stuff that's available on DVD-A, assuming no CDs to supplement your listening.

Computer based is the most flexible and is the future (specially now with Windows Vista). Unless you are very uncomfortable around computers.
