New Product Suggestion
« on: 22 Aug 2006, 08:04 pm »
Since many people work at computers all day, having a nice audio system can make the work day more enjoyable. I've been trying to locate a solid state amp in the 10W to 15W range for my office system. I'm currently using a 2.5W SET amp that I'd like to replace.

How much work would it be to turn a D100 into a D10?

Why would you want to decrease watts?

Sorry, I left out a critical detail -- the speakers are sitting on the desktop only 30 inches away.

Right, why not just buy the D100?

A little headroom never hurt anybody.

If you're looking to cut cost, how about a t-amp.

It wouldn't save a whole lot to make a lower power version. I am working on a smaller package/less expensive 2 x 100 stereo amplifier, but don't know if it will actually become a product. I'm really making it because I need a new test amp for my bench  :icon_lol:

As kfr01 mentioned, one of the lil T amps would probably work fine for your computer setup.

Because with that many watts I'll have limited fine level control. I previously used a NAD C320BEE (50wpc) and I ended up with two volume settings -- too low and too high.

The 2.5W SET amp plays much louder than I ever care to listen, so even 10W will be plenty.

I'm not really looking to cut cost. My alternative at the moment is the $1500 Sugden power amp (25wpc) and I'm afraid I'll be back with the same level setting problem.

Thanks for the reply.

Since I have $1800 in the system not counting the Decware SET amp, I have a tough time considering one of the T-amps. Looks like Sugden is my best option.

How about some attenuators along with your current amp?  I used Rothwell's inline attenuators in my system a while back - they take about 10db off the volume, I think.  No obvious impact on dynamics, either (at least to my ears, in my humble system).

If I can find mine, I could even send them along so you could try them out.

I tried the Rothwell inline attenuators -- nice products. I even had him make up a custom 20dB pair after trying the 10dB set. I'll probably end up using them with the Sugden.

We could always build you a pair of D-100's with reduced gain  :D

That's a good thought. Can you give me some ideas on how to determine an appropriate gain?

Call me and we can discuss it...shouldn't be hard to figure out.

Thanks Dusty. Let me give it some thought for a day before I call you. I don't want to waste your time.

Here's another new product suggestion:

Combining the power supply with DAC/phono/headphone units since they're so recommended together anyway.  This should save cost and complication.

Bob,

NuForce offers a small digital integrated, probably at a better price than Dusty can custom it for.  (Keep Dusty working on stuff I want.   )

How about a TVC passive pre-amp?

Personally, I prefer good potentiometer based passives.

There's no real reason for us to make a TVC, there are already several companies who use S&B transformer/rotary switch if you like that type.

Thanks for all the additional product suggestions and to Dusty for offerring to build a D-100 with custom gain for me. After quite a bit of thought I have decided that I don't want a switching amp on my desktop.

I have chosen an ATI AT602. It has input level adjustments that allows me to operate my passive volume control in a range where I have more level control.

Thanks to all,
Bob
