also (i think its called clipping) when you turn the volume up it comes through the speakers... is this normal for the amps or is there a problem elsewere in my system.
The system also seems a bit bright will this calm down over time or do i need to change some of the components ... based in the uk

The brightness will mellow after 100 hrs of so of playing. I have Ref 9's, and have never heard any unusual sounds emenating from my speakers, except when I power the amps on or off. Once my CD player is running, it is musical bliss. I would think you have a problem elsewhere in your system. That or you are a Chelsea fan.

It is possible that your Ref 8b (100Wrms) doesn't have the power to drive the speaker. Email support and we can work with you to figure it out.
